Kentucky Derby Payout: Recapping All of the Betting Action from Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs was a muddy mess for the Kentucky Derby, but the race was brilliant and provided a hefty payout for those who bet on Golden Soul to place or show.
Heavy betting favorite Orb won the race, providing a modest payout for those who bet on him. Golden Soul—a 34-1 long shot before the race started—shockingly finished in second place, while Revolutionary finished in third place.

Golden Soul's second-place finish was shocking because this is a horse that hasn't won a single race since its maiden race. In the three races before the Derby, Golden Soul finished in second place, sixth place and fourth place, respectively. All three races were Grade 2 or Grade 3.
Orb's first-place finish wasn't unexpected, but it was brilliant nevertheless. Jockey Joel Rosario did a masterful job of holding his horse in check throughout the first two-thirds of the race, as the duo stayed near the back of the pack, waiting for the right time to press the action.
Once Orb finally kicked into high gear, he finished the race with a furious final kick that left every other horse in the dust (figuratively speaking, of course). BuzzFeed News offered a gorgeous shot of the moment just before Orb crossed the finish line, well ahead of the field:
Revolutionary's finish in third place was in line with the odds given before the race. A 6-1 favorite to win the race at the start, this horse lived up to expectations with a phenomenal run.
Goldencents (7-1 odds) and Verrazano (8-1 odds), on the other hand, failed to live up to expectations.
Verrazano finished in 14th place, though after the race, it wasn't hard to see why. At some point during the race, while fighting for position, Verrazano suffered a nasty cut to his leg.
Goldencents, on the other hand, didn't have any excuse besides the fact that this horse clearly isn't a mudder. A 17th-place finish was certainly not what anyone expected from this horse, who was one of the fastest in the field before the race, according to James Scully of brisnet.com.
Looking ahead to the Preakness, all eyes will be on Orb to see if this horse can win the second leg of the Triple Crown. After the display we saw from Orb at the Derby in horrible conditions, it's clear that he has the speed, endurance and competitive nature to give the Triple Crown a good run.
