Kentucky Derby 2013 Results: Most Disappointing Performances at Churchill Downs
Orb came in as the favorite of the 139th Kentucky Derby and ran strong enough to win the race with ease. Unfortunately, a number of other contenders failed to live up to expectations.
While fans focused on the impressive performance of the eventually victor and its ability to come from behind to win, some early favorites had simply awful showings.
Considering that most of them will come back to compete in either the Preakness or Belmont Stakes, these performances are certain to stay with them and affect future races.
Here are the full results from the Run for the Roses, with an extra look at the horses that were the most disappointing on Saturday.

Verrazano
Todd Pletcher trained five horses that entered the Kentucky Derby, but Verrazano might have had the highest expectations in the weeks leading up to the event.
The horse had an undefeated record after winning each of its four previous events, all of which were in 2013. Although the lack of experience caused some doubts, veteran jockey John Velazquez helped silence critics.
Even the wet conditions were not expected to slow down Verrazano due to the size and pure speed of the thoroughbred.
However, it fell apart down the stretch, falling from fourth place at the one-mile mark to 14th in the final quarter-mile. As one of the top contenders heading into Churchill Downs, these struggles were disappointing to many who had faith in the talented horse.
Goldencents
In every one of Goldencents' previous races, it got off to a good start and then held on to either stay near the front or pull away from the pack.
The contender had three wins in the previous four starts, including a first-place finish at the prestigious Santa Anita Derby. This success had the horse listed at 7-1 odds heading into the race, which was third best behind Orb and Revolutionary.
Unfortunately, it appeared that the length of the race was a problem for Goldencents.
With a good post position, jockey Kevin Krigger was able to get up to second place quickly in the first straight away. The horse was unable to keep up this pace as it started to fall behind on the final turn.
By the home stretch, Goldencents was far from contention and finished in 17th. After seeing this performance, it is unlikely it will be able to do much better at the Preakness Stakes.
Itsmyluckyday
This speedster was supposed to set the pace early and possibly hold on for a good finish at the end. Itsmyluckyday had shown this ability at the Florida Derby, when it was barely outran by Orb at the end.
At the Kentucky Derby, however, it never truly had a chance.
The horse got off to a poor start from the No. 12 post and was never able to get to the front of the pack. The closest it ever reached with sixth place, and then it once again fell behind.
With 10 starts and five career wins heading into the race, Itsmyluckyday was one of the most experienced horses in the field. Many thought that this would help in a crowded race, especially with wet conditions.
These hopes were quickly dashed as Itsmyluckday finished in 15th place. It appears that this top contender could have used a bit more luck in this one.
