Kentucky Derby 2013 Post Positions: Where Are the Top Contenders Slotted?

Charlie PotterJun 7, 2018

The 139th Kentucky Derby is set to for tomorrow, May 4, and the field of horses has finally taken shape. The post positions are set, solidifying where the top contenders will be slotted for the Derby.

Black Onyx, who was slotted in the No. 1 post position, was scratched from a chance to “run for the roses” for undisclosed reasons, leaving the field with only 19 horses. Onyx was a 50-1 odds favorite to win the race.

The field of 19 horses is a quality group, but there are four contenders that have the best shots at claiming the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Here we reveal where the top contenders are slotted in the recently unveiled post positions.

14. Verrazano

All eyes will be on Verrazano, who is the favorite in the race.

Verrazano is slotted in the No. 14 post position, with 4/1 odds to win it all. His trainer, John R. Velazquez, has to be pleased with their positioning and odds to win the Derby.

16. Orb

Verrazano might lead the other horses, but Orb is not far behind.

Orb is slotted in the No. 16 post position, and owns 4/1 odds just like Verrazano.

The two horses are only a horse apart from each other, and they could be even closer as the finish line approaches.

8. Goldencents

Goldencents is slotted in the No. 8 post position, with 11/2 odds. Unlike Verrazano and Orb, Goldencents is on the inside of the top 10 posts, which could prove to be an advantage.

Goldencents' jockey Kevin Krigger, who could make history as the first African American jockey to win the Derby since 1902, should be thrilled with he and his horse's positioning for the race.

3. Revolutionary

Revolutionary is slotted at the No. 3 post position, with 9/1 odds.

Normandy Invasion, who is slotted at No. 5, also owns 9/1 odds, but Revolutionary gets a slight edge because of his jockey.

Calvin Borel is the jockey for Revolutionary in the 2013 Kentucky Derby. Borel was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, and that can't hurt Revolutionary's chances at securing a victory on Saturday.
