Kentucky Derby 2013 Entries: Underdogs That Have Potential to Stun Favorites

Maxwell OgdenJun 2, 2018

On May 4, 2013, the world will shift its attention to the annual Kentucky Derby. As is the case with every race, oddsmakers have labeled the favorites and created the perception that this race is not to be won by underdogs but to be lost by powerhouses.

The question is, which of the under-the-radar horses could stun the favorites and win the 2013 Kentucky Derby?

When the field is set, it's rarely difficult to find the horses that have developed into the favored racers. Often, those horses are coming off wins at previous events or have received praise due to the high-profile nature of their owner, trainer or jockey.

Mylute

On April 30, Mylute's odds to win the Kentucky Derby were 33-to-1, per Bovada. On May 2, the odds improved to 16-to-1.

That's a testament to how legitimate of a contender this horse has become.

Orb and Verrazano remain in the driver's seat amongst oddsmakers, but Mylute is moving up for a reason. Perhaps nothing is more intriguing than the fact that one of the nation's top jockeys is going to be riding Mylute at the Kentucky Derby.

After winning 11 major races in 2012, Rosie Napravnik has already won three in 2013. The 25-year-old will be going for her first Kentucky Derby win while guiding Mylute across the finish line.

Having won the Doubledogdare Stakes in Lexington, Kentucky earlier this year, Napravnik feels comfortable in this area. While the major stage will be a different animal to tame, there aren't many riders as hot as Napravnik.

That's a major reason for Mylute being a legitimate contender.

Oxbow

According to Bovada, Oxbow currently has 33-1 odds to win the 2013 Kentucky Derby. With that being said, it's clear that this horse is being sold short.

Three-time Kentucky Derby winner Gary L. Stevens will be riding Oxbow at this year's event.

Stevens won the Kentucky Derby in 1988, 1995 and 1997. He has also won the Preakness Stakes twice and the Belmont Stakes three times, including his most most recent crown in 2001.

With that being said, Stevens has been retired since 2005.

If we've learned anything from his illustrious career, however, it's that anything is possible when he's on a horse. In a 2013 Kentucky Derby field in which nothing appears to be certain, Stevens' presence is encouraging.

When you've won the event three times, who's to say you won't get a fourth?
