Morgan Mahalak Commits to Oregon: Ducks Land Stud Dual-Threat QB

Oregon has picked up a commitment from 3-star dual-threat quarterback Morgan Mahalak out of Greenbrae, Calif. Even though he's yet to start a high school game at quarterback, he has tremendous potential.

Mahalak is ranked as the No. 24 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and he checks in at 6'3'', 190 pounds.

Brandon P. Oliver of ESPN.com reports on the commitment:

Mahalak committed to Oregon on Tuesday, just hours after Ducks offensive coordinator Scott Frost watched him in an early-morning workout. He is the team's third commit in the Class of 2014. 

"I just talked to Coach (Mark) Helfrich and Coach Frost and told them that I was committing. Coach Helfrich was ecstatic. He was at some Pac-12 meeting, but he said he was really pumped," Mahalak said. "He asked me if I was sure I wanted to do it and said they didn't want to pressure me at all. I told him I have been waiting for this and I'm ready to go."

Even though Mahalak is inexperienced as a starting quarterback, it's not as if he is inexperienced as a football player.

He was the backup to 2013 4-star quarterback Jared Goff, who led Marin Catholic to the CIF State D-III championship last season (Bob Rickert/OregonLive.com) and threw for 3,692 yards and 40 touchdowns in the process (247Sports).

Mahalak mostly played as a receiver, according to Rickert, but now he has big shoes to fill at Marin. For Ducks fans, it should be interesting to see how he handles the pressure of being the guy.

As a quarterback, Mahalak has a strong arm, is able to put good zip on the ball and he can squeeze it into tight windows. He'll be accurate with darts over the middle or to the sidelines, but he can also put touch on the ball and put it where only his receiver can make a play. His accuracy stands out, especially when considering the strength of his throws.

Mahalak is also an athletic and elusive runner with long, strong strides. He patiently waits for holes to open, but he also has quick feet and a good cut move that helps him make defenders miss and opens running lanes.

Potential is the key word with Mahalak, because he has a ton of it.

Obviously, Oregon saw enough potential in him to make an offer, and obviously Mahalak saw enough potential with the Ducks to commit.

This should end up being a good fit for both parties.
