2013 NFL Draft Grades: Scores for All 32 Organizations
Handing out draft grades before players have a chance to hit the field may seem like a trivial exercise, but there were some clear winners and losers in the 2013 NFL draft.
Landing quality starters in the draft is a critical element to building a long-term winning franchise. Some teams are better than others, and the teams that consistently draft well are the ones making playoff appearances year in and year out.
Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson is one of the best in the business, and his savvy draft picks over the years have been the catalyst for his team's consistent success.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are under new management this year, and this organization seems to be on the right track after this year's draft. That said, poor drafting crippled the Jaguars for years before the team made a necessary change to hire Dave Caldwell.
Here's a quick look at how each team fared in this year's draft. I'll highlight a few teams after the grades for further analysis.

Ted Thompson: Green Bay Packers (A)
The Green Bay Packers have won 47 regular-season games and a Super Bowl in the past four years. Thompson once again did a masterful job loading up his roster with promising young players to keep the hot streak going in 2013.
The biggest areas of need on the Packers' roster heading into the draft was the defensive line and their offensive backfield.
With the team's first pick, Thompson selected one of the best 3-4 defensive linemen in this year's class in Datone Jones out of UCLA. Jones will compete for a starting role from the first day of training camp and will likely be one of the team's two starting defensive ends when it opens up the season against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1.
Then, to address the team's need for a running back, Thompson landed Eddie Lacy out of Alabama at the end of Round 2. Lacy was widely considered by most draft experts to be the top running back in this year's draft class and the only one worth taking in Round 1. Landing him late in the second round was a tremendous value pick for the Packers.
Thompson then turned his attention to the team's offensive line, which has been in disrepair the past couple of seasons. He drafted two linemen who have a chance to compete for starting roles in 2013. At the least, they should provide the team with much-needed depth.
Landing running back Johnathan Franklin late in the fourth round was as much of a steal as any pick in this year's draft. Franklin and Lacy will give Aaron Rodgers the running game he's lacked for the past few years.
Thompson's draft will keep the Packers in the hunt for another Super Bowl this year and in the years to come. He's a master at his craft and a joy to watch for draft enthusiasts.
Dave Caldwell: Jacksonville Jaguars (B+)
After years of mismanagement, it was refreshing to see the Jaguars finally put together a solid draft under new general manager Caldwell.
Taking offensive tackle Luke Joeckel wasn't a sexy pick. Caldwell could have justified taking either Dion Jordan or Ezekiel Ansah to bolster his team's horrid pass rush from last year. But Joeckel was the best player available, and he'll be a huge addition to the team's offense in 2013 and beyond.
Caldwell's concentrated effort to bring in receivers and cornerbacks will also pay dividends.
He also landed one of the premier safeties in the draft at the top of the second round in Jonathan Cyprien out of Florida International. This hard-hitting young man will transform the team's secondary with his ferocious attitude and breakneck style of play.
Josh Evans out of Florida isn't as well known as Matt Elam, but he will challenge for the team's starting free safety spot, and Caldwell brought on three cornerbacks to compete for playing time.
Ace Sanders and Denard Robinson bring speed and quickness to the team's offensive attack. If Blaine Gabbert or Chad Henne can play at a high level this year, Jacksonville's offense has a chance to be explosive with Maurice Jones-Drew coming back healthy from his Lisfranc injury.
Jacksonville may not be ready to compete for a playoff spot in 2013, but there's no doubt this franchise is headed in the right direction.
John Idzik: New York Jets (B+)
Idzik doesn't have an easy job cleaning up after Mike Tannenbaum's mess.
The Jets will be a competitive club in 2013, but the team's chances of making the playoffs are slim. If this team does break through with a playoff berth, though, it will be due in large part to the emergence of a few rookies Idzik selected in this year's draft.
Dee Milliner has the unenviable task of replacing Darrelle Revis, but the young star out of Alabama has the requisite skill to be an instant star in Rex Ryan's defense. He'll likely slide right into the starting lineup opposite Antonio Cromartie, and nobody should be surprised if he is one of the men in the hunt for the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award by the end of the season.
Sheldon Richardson is an amazing pickup for the team's defensive line. Adding him to play with Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples gives the Jets one of the most talented young front lines in the league.
Landing Geno Smith in Round 2 was too good a bargain to pass up, and regardless of how Smith pans out on the NFL, Idzik 100 percent made the right move to select him.
Offensive tackles Brian Winters and Oday Aboushi both have a chance to compete for starting roles on the offensive line, and the value Idzik landed with them in Rounds 3 and 4 was phenomenal.
Judging by what we've seen thus far from Idzik, the Jets will be a playoff contender in a few short years, if not sooner.
