Favorites
Verrazano: 9-2
If his trainer and jockey are any indication, Verrazano should be the undisputed favorite to take the Kentucky Derby Saturday in stunning fashion.
Jockey John Velazquez will be riding his 14th Kentucky Derby, having won the 2011 edition with Animal Kingdom and inducted into the Hall of Fame that same year. He constantly finds himself atop one of the best horses in the field, and this year is no different.
His trainer isn't half bad, either. Todd Pletcher led all trainers in monies won in 2011, as well as the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. He also trained Rags to Riches, who became the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 102 years.
Orb: 5-1
This female horse comes from a legendary pedigree that boasts itself as fit for long distances, something Verrazano cannot say for himself.
Trained by the world-famous Claude "Shug" McGaughey III, who grew up in and has spent his life around Kentucky horse racing, Orb is one of the heavy favorites to notch victory at Churchill Downs.
Orb's owners and trainers opted to go with a younger jockey in 28-year-old Joel Rosario, who is one of the best up-and-comers in the sport.
Revolutionary: 7-1
This isn't Pletcher's only horse in the field, and it may not even be his best horse in the field. But Revolutionary has the chance to stun the world by winning Saturday's race.
When you look at his jockey, it may not be as much of a surprise after all. Calvin Borel is the only jockey to win the Kentucky Derby three times in four years, and just recently was elected into the Hall of Fame prior to race week.
As for the horse, Revolutionary has shown great ability to run the distance with high-class speed, which doesn't bode well for the field.
