Ranking the Top Fits for Ahmad Bradshaw Post-Draft
Former New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw is finally healthy.
A source told ProFootballTalk.com that the aggressive runner "has received full medical clearance to resume all football activities."
Though his recent history of nagging injuries is concerning, Bradshaw is only 27 years old, and he averaged 4.6 yards per carry in 2012.
Let's rank the top five fits for this small but powerful runner.
(*Denotes undrafted free agent)
5. Philadelphia Eagles
1 of 5Running backs on the roster: LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, Chris Polk, Miguel Maysonet*, Matthew Tucker*
LeSean McCoy is an ideal feature back for Chip Kelly's spread offense, and, fumbling issues aside, Bryce Brown proved to be more than capable of filling in as the second-string guy in the Eagles' running back committee.
Chris Polk has talent, but he went undrafted in 2012 and doesn't have a career carry on his resume.
Bradshaw isn't a dynamic speed back, but then again, he's quick and can run between the tackles with authority.
4. Oakland Raiders
2 of 5Running backs on the roster: Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings, Latavius Murray, Jeremy* Stewart, Deonte Williams*
Darren McFadden struggled mightily in the zone-blocking scheme in 2012, and his vast injury history means the club should have as many insurance plans in place as possible.
Rashad Jennings is a decent backup, but beyond him, there isn't any proven talent at the running back spot.
Bradshaw could be added on a cheap veteran contract, and his assertive running style would be welcomed by head coach Dennis Allen.
3. St. Louis Rams
3 of 5Running backs on the roster: Daryl Richardson, Isaiah Pead, Zac Stacy, Terrance Ganaway, Chase Reynolds, Bennie Cunningham*
With Steven Jackson now a member of the Atlanta Falcons, the St. Louis Rams could be looking for new stability at the running back position.
Daryl Richardson was an ideal change-of-pace speed back as a rookie, and he'll enter training camp as the team's starter.
Isaiah Pead was a 2012 second-round pick, but he barely carried the ball as a rookie.
Bradshaw would bring some veteran leadership to the Rams' backfield.
2. Houston Texans
4 of 5Running backs on the roster: Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Ray Graham*, Dennis Johnson*, Cierre Wood*
Arian Foster is the unquestioned feature back for the Texans and a true master running in the zone-blocking scheme. Ben Tate has proven to be a capable reinforcement.
However, Foster and Tate weren't as effective on a per-carry basis in 2012. And although the team brought in a handful of undrafted free-agent running backs, it could use another veteran on the roster.
1. Minnesota Vikings
5 of 5Running backs on the roster: Adrian Peterson, Toby Gerhart, Joe Barnyard, Robbie Rouse*, Rayon Simmons*, Bradley Randle*, Jerodis Williams*
Adrian Peterson is the league's reigning MVP and the undisputed best running back in the NFL. Behind him is the rugged Toby Gerhart. After that, there's nothing but inexperienced players and undrafted free agents.
For a team that made the postseason in 2012 and added Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson in the offseason, the Vikings could bring Bradshaw into the mix to occasionally spell Peterson and provide an energetic boost to the running game.
