NFL Draft 2013 Results: GMs Who Need Their 1st Pick to Pan Out

At the end of the 2013 NFL season, several general managers will lose their jobs. At the heart of their fresh unemployment are likely to be poor draft choices—especially in the first round. 

Obviously, some general managers have earned far more leeway and margin for error than others. These next three guys have not earned that leeway. 

Here are three guys who would appear to be on a short leash and made moves risky enough that, if their first selection in this draft does not pan out, they will be looking for a new job by the next NFL draft. 

Jeff Ireland, Miami Dolphins

Pick No. 3: Dion Jordan

The Dolphins have not been timid this offseason, and that showed up nearly instantly at the NFL draft. 

Sitting at No. 12, Miami traded pick No. 42 to swap first-round selections with the Raiders. When the trade went down, many assumed the Dolphins were making the move to take tackle Lane Johnson. Two tackles were already off the board, Johnson was widely considered the last elite tackle prospect and Miami had a need at the position. 

However, they passed on Johnson and went for Oregon's Dion Jordan.

Jordan figures to be an instant boost to the Dolphins' pass rush, and he better be. Miami lost a valuable resource with the 42nd pick.

If the NFL proves to be too physical for Jordan, the Dolphins will have just thrown away two premium picks on nothing. That is not something Ireland's job security could withstand.  

Reggie McKenzie, Oakland Raiders

Pick No. 12: D.J. Hayden

As we just discussed, the Raiders traded down with the Dolphins, and it's a good thing. They were prepared to take cornerback D.J. Hayden at No. 3. 

Hayden was considered by many a reach at No. 12, let alone No. 3. 

With the trade down, the Raiders took a lot of pressure off of Hayden and some of the pressure off of McKenzie. However, McKenzie only picked up one selection for dropping down nine spots in the first round. That is not a great deal of value. 

If Hayden turns out to be as good as the Raiders believe he will be, these moves were absolutely genius. If he's a bust, the Raiders will have very little to show for the No. 3 pick in the draft. 

Given the Raiders' anemic performance last season, in McKenzie's first year at the helm, he needs this pick to be a hit. 

John Idzik, New York Jets

Pick No. 9: Dee Milliner 

The Jets shouldn't have drafted Dee Milliner. I like him. I think he is the best corner in this draft, but it will be hard for the Jets to look like winners in this situation.

New York traded Darrelle Revis for Tampa Bay's 2013 first-round selection (No. 13). 

While the Jets didn't use the pick they acquired for Revis on Milliner, those two will be forever linked. 

Now, in order for the Jets to be viewed as winners in this deal, Milliner is going to have to, at least, put up performances comparable to what Revis produces. Milliner won't cost as much and he is younger, so he has some leeway there, but still, he better get close to producing at Revis' level. Otherwise the Jets will have just, essentially, gotten worse at corner while losing four spots in the first round. 

Idzik really put himself in the spotlight with these moves. Now he has to hope they pan out.
