Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Calling Fact or Fiction on Latest Rumblings

0 of 4

Arsenal transfer rumours come thick and fast, but they are more often fiction than fact.

In this article, we'll be taking a look at some of the latest rumours involving the Gunners and see which ones may become a reality.

Some may cost too much, others may not be the right fight or may not be good enough to increase the quality of the side.

The Gunners get linked to players for all sorts of positions. Some are needs and others aren't.

Here's the rundown of some of the latest transfer rumours involving Arsenal.

Maxime Gonalons

According to the Metro, Arsenal have opened talks with Olympique Lyonnais to sign defensive midfielder Maxime Gonalons.

    Fact or Fiction? Fact.

This is a typical Arsene Wenger signing. Gonalons is young, French and technical enough to fit in with Arsenal's style of play.

The other major plus in this potential signing is that he fits a need.

The Gunners need a defensive midfielder to help shield the back four, and this season Gonalons has been excellent in that role.

From a statistical standpoint, he has been extremely effective on the defensive end, with four tackles and 3.1 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 and the Europa League.

He's pretty good with his passing as well, averaging 88.1 percent accuracy in that regard. On the offensive end, he's chipped in with four goals.

Gonalons has the physicality to provide the bite that Arsenal's midfield needs, and his 6'2" frame will come in handy on set pieces.

Overall, this signing certainly looks like one Arsene Wenger will be willing to make, if the cost is right.

Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas is one of many goalkeepers who has been linked (via the Mirror) with a move to Arsenal.

    Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Arsenal may need some better competition for Wojciech Szczesny, but it certainly won't come in the form of two-time European Championship winner and one-time World Cup winner.

The Gunners are a club of high standard, but Casillas is a target well out of their reach, if only for the finances the club would have to pull together to sign him.

Rene Adler

Rene Adler is yet to be subject to an official bid from Arsenal, but the club has been linked with the German goalkeeper (via the Express).

    Fact or Fiction? Fact.

Unlike Casillas, Adler is a more feasible option for Arsenal's goalkeeping department.

He would still provide the necessary competition the Polish youngster needs without the cost, or without stepping on Szczesny's toes too much.

The 28-year-old is an experienced campaigner and would provide extra quality in the goalkeeping department for the Gunners.

One, or both, of Szczesny's backups could leave this summer should the German join the club.

Fabio Quagliarella

A forward would be a great addition for Arsenal, and Fabio Quagliarella is one player who has been linked to the squad (via the Express).

    Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Arsenal needs a striker who can provide and score goals at a high level of quality. Quagliarella is not that striker.

Quagliarella is 30 years old and a key member of the Juventus squad.

He's only scored more than 20 goals once in his career, and he certainly won't bring that type of productivity to Arsenal at this stage in his career.
