2013 NFL Draft Grades: Overall Scores for Each Team's Class

Justin OnslowJun 3, 2018

You won’t often find two people with the same opinion on a team’s draft performance. As is the case with the players drafted, everyone has their own beliefs about what their team did to get better.

And while draft grades vary greatly from person to person, there’s really no right answer. We won’t know the success of this year’s draft class for several years, when players have had their opportunities to shine under the bright lights of the NFL.

Still, there’s value in analyzing what teams did in the draft. Consider it a starting point for what we should expect from teams (and their new additions) going forward.

Let’s take a look at full grades for all 32 teams and highlight a few specific teams with notable drafts. One got significantly better, one continued its poor performance on draft day and the third found itself somewhere in the middle.

A Dismal Day in Dallas

Jerry Jones continues to raise questions about why he is the primary decision maker in Dallas. His selections in the 2013 draft didn’t help his cause, and Dallas is left to enter the season with an underwhelming crop of new rookies.

With their first selection (after trading back to No. 31), the Cowboys selected Wisconsin center Travis Frederick—a move that had many scratching their head. Frederick is one of the best centers in this class, but Dallas probably didn’t need to use a first-round pick to acquire him.

On the other hand, this wasn’t an easy year to trade down in the draft given the tremendous depth and general lack of elite players. If Jones really wanted his center and wasn’t able to find a trade partner, selecting Frederick wasn’t as bad a move as it looked.

But Dallas’ biggest problem wasn’t who it selected—it was who it didn’t select. The Cowboys have some big needs on the defensive side of the ball, and those needs went largely unaddressed. Adding safety J.J. Wilcox with the 80th pick was a terrific decision (considering the demands of the position in Monte Kiffin’s Tampa-2), but Dallas still needed to add some depth on its defensive line and a starting-caliber linebacker who can ease the transition to a 4-3 this season.

Their crop of rookies may prove to be a lot better than it looks, but the Cowboys didn’t do much to fill their biggest needs. We’ll see how that works out in 2013.

The Pack on Track

Value was the name of the game for Ted Thompson this year. Arguably one of the best drafters in the entire league, the Packers general manager found tremendous value throughout the draft and filled some big positional needs in the process.

Green Bay grabbed defensive end Datone Jones in the first round, and while it wasn’t a flashy pick, one look at this cut-up tells all you need to know about the big-bodied pass-rusher.

Landing Jones at No. 26 was impressive, but Thompson’s best moves came in the second and fourth rounds with the additions of Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin, respectively. Both backs were among the most talented in this draft class, and it’s not hard to see what Green Bay plans to do with its offense this year.

The Packers have been without a quality running game for the last few years. Don’t expect that to be the case this season.

While Green Bay could have used another linebacker or two, you can’t fault Thompson for pulling the trigger on the value presented to him. It was yet another quality draft for a Packers team that will be even more dangerous in 2013.

Steeling Talent

Kevin Colbert has taken some heat for a 2013 draft class that yielded very few starting-caliber players in 2012, but the Steelers general manager is still one of the best in the business. His 2013 draft class proves it.

Pittsburgh released James Harrison this offseason and immediately found his replacement in the first round. Georgia’s Jarvis Jones has top-10 talent, and as Colbert is known to do in the first round, he found excellent value at No. 17 when he selected the Georgia standout.

Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell was a bit of a reach in the second round, but there’s no question the Steelers need a new feature back. Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman didn’t show enough in 2012 to instill confidence in slotting either back at the Steelers’ Week 1 starter.

Oregon State wide receiver Markus Wheaton (No. 79) was a tremendous third-round selection to make up for the second-round reach, though. Wheaton is a perfect fit in Pittsburgh, filling the void left by Mike Wallace’s departure.

Adding Shamarko Thomas and Landry Jones in the fourth round was another terrific decision on Colbert’s part, adding depth to two positions desperately lacking a quality backup. In all, Pittsburgh added as many as four players who could see considerable action in 2013.
