NFL Draft 2013: Day 3 Picks Who Will Make Immediate Impact as Rookies

Tim DanielsApr 27, 2013

Just because a prospect is selected on the third day of the NFL draft doesn't automatically mean he is a developmental project. The only difference is that he must work a little harder during practices and preseason games to stand out from the crowd.

Alfred Morris, Alfonzo Dennard and Vick Ballard are among the players who were drafted outside the first three rounds before last season, but they still managed to earn playing time as rookies. Another instant-impact group should emerge from a draft class with as much depth as this year's.

With that in mind, let's examine three players who finally heard their name called on Day 3 and have a good chance to make their presence felt right away. If they do, the return on investment for their new teams will be very high, which is always the goal.

Alex Okafor (DE, Arizona Cardinals)

Okafor is an immensely talented prospect who could have been selected at the end of Round 1 without it feeling like a major reach. Instead, the Cardinals get him in the fourth round to help bolster a pass rush that ranked in the middle of the pack last season.

The Texas product racked up 12.5 sacks in his final collegiate season, including a monster performance in the team's bowl game (eight tackles and 4.5 sacks). That type of dominant play up front is what he's capable of once he gains experience at the next level.

It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals utilize him since he was projected for a 4-3 defense. Whether it's on the line or as a stand-up linebacker in the 3-4, he possesses the power and length necessary to step right in and attack the passer.

Johnathan Franklin (RB, Green Bay Packers)

A lot of fans outside of Green Bay probably couldn't name the Packers' leading rusher last season. It was Alex Green at less than 500 yards. James Starks and Cedric Benson were among the other backs to get a chance but weren't able to secure the starting spot.

Identifying the weakness, the Packers have added two backs in the draft. First, they took Eddie Lacy in the second round, and then they added Franklin in the fourth. Both players should immediately be given the chance to get regular-season reps.

Franklin is coming off a huge final season at UCLA. He rushed for over 1,700 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on the ground. He also added 33 catches and two TDs in the passing game. That type of versatility is a perfect fit for Green Bay and gives him a great opportunity to shine right away.

Denard Robinson (WR, Jacksonville Jaguars)

Where Robinson would land was one of the biggest storylines heading into Day 3. The Jaguars decided to grab him early in the fifth round after grabbing fellow playmaker Ace Sanders in the fourth. They should definitely bring more excitement to the table in Jacksonville.

When it comes to Robinson, it's still unclear exactly where he fits in, and that's what the Jaguars will work to figure out in the coming months. That said, he's shown a high-end ability to make defenders miss and has flashed game-breaking speed.

Players like that can usually carve out a niche pretty quickly. Whether it's as a receiver, running back, gimmick quarterback or in the return game, Robinson should be able to find the field quite a bit as a rookie. The Jags should simply get the ball into his hands and let him make plays.
