Manti Te'o Thought Call During NFL Draft From Chargers Was Prank by Friends

Forgive Manti Te'o if he's a little dubious of telecommunications these days. As Great White would say, he's once bitten, twice shy.

According to Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated, when Te'o received the call from the San Diego Chargers that he would be their second-round selection, he thought that he was being pranked.

Te'o has been one of the most closely watched names throughout the draft process for on-field and off-the-field reasons. He led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a national championship game appearance on the strength of his Heisman runner-up performance. But then, he was at the center of one of the most bizarre stories of the offseason when it was discovered that he had been the victim of an elaborate hoax involving a girlfriend who didn't exist.

Since then, Te'o has been one of the most scrutinized prospects in recent memory. From his on-field performance against Alabama in the national championship game to questions about his gullibility, nothing has been off-limits for pundits to speculate on.

As it turns out, he's working on that gullibility aspect.

Fortunately, his instincts were wrong this time, and it was actually the San Diego Chargers on the other end of the phone. They selected Te'o with the sixth pick in the second round and 38th overall.

While the second-round slotting is a little lower than many thought he was worth, Te'o should step into a good situation with the Chargers. He'll be afforded the opportunity to start right away and start making headlines for his play on the field.
