NFL Draft 2013 Compensatory Picks: Complete Guide to All Selections
Compensatory picks are always one of the more overlooked aspects of the NFL draft, but the extra picks that teams receive can turn out to have a big impact.
Every year the NFL awards 32 compensatory picks to various teams that have lost veteran players to free agency. The picks cannot be traded and are awarded throughout Rounds 3-7, depending on the value of the players who have left the team.
Losing a high-profile free agent can set a team back. While bringing in a mid-round or late-round pick doesn't always mean a team will be able to fill the void created, it can help soften the blow of losing a player in the offseason.
For the 2013 draft, 16 teams received at least one compensatory pick, and the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons received the most picks with four. The picks were determined based on the losses incurred during the 2012 offseason.
The defending Super Bowl champion Ravens have holes to fill after the mass exodus that took place this offseason. While it's impossible to replace first-ballot hall of famers Ed Reed and Ray Lewis, the Ravens must address glaring needs in order to contend for another Super Bowl.
The Houston Texans received the highest pick at No. 95 after losing Mario Williams, Jason Allen, Mike Brisiel and Joel Dreessen in the 2012 offseason. The Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans were also awarded additional third-round selections.
The picks can't be traded, but it does give teams a little extra flexibility as they begin to take more calculated risks in the later rounds. For instance, the Ravens can afford to take a gamble on a potential playmaker like Da'rick Rogers to replace Anquan Boldin in the later rounds because of their wealth of picks.
Below is a breakdown of every compensatory pick awarded in the 2013 NFL draft.
