Kentucky Derby 2013 Odds: Breaking Down Best Value Picks in Field This Year

Dan TalintyreApr 27, 2013

Arguably the biggest horse racing event of the year is nearly upon us, with the 2013 Kentucky Derby scheduled for next weekend at the illustrious Churchill Downs track.

The Derby Trial will take place this weekend, which will mark the end of the road to the Derby and will give us the full field of 20 horses which will compete in the famous event—something that has been hotly contested throughout the past few months.

Yet whilst we don't yet know the full field, or the all-important barrier positions, we do know many of the horses that will compete in the race, with some early odds already out and available online (via allhorseracing.ag). Read on to see a full listing of the early odds for this year's race, as well as some of the best value picks for the 2013 Kentucky Derby.

Best Value Picks for 2013 Kentucky Derby

Mylute, 35/1

Mylute is steadily improving coming into the Kentucky Derby this year, and whilst the odds might not favor him in this race, he'll definitely be a contender if the pace is at all slow in the big race.

He was very impressive over the longer distance in the Grade II Louisiana Derby, but with a sprinters pedigree is more than capable of taking out the top prize this year—something that Rosie Napravnik will be looking to tap into here.

Napravnik won the Kentucky Oaks last year and had a number of strong rides on Shanghai Bobby throughout her career and should get the best out of Mylute here, which could make her the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby.

The 35/1 odds sound very appealing for a quite strong horse.

Normandy Invasion, 10/1

The 10/1 odds might not sound like the greatest odds in the world, but given the form and talent that this horse has, the 10/1 quote is incredibly good value for the race.

The Chad Brown-trained Normandy Invasion flew down the outside at the Wood Memorial recently, and whilst he narrowly missed out on the top spot, he did show that he has more than enough talent to win the prestigious race with his pedigree of speed and residual stamina likely to help him here.

Normandy Invasion has been working out very well lately and is starting to garner great support heading into the big race.

So much so that I wouldn't be surprised to see the 10/1 quote drop in the near future, which shows just how good the value being offered right now is.
