Kentucky Derby Trial Stakes 2013: Post Time, Odds & Predictions for Entire Field

Patrick ClarkeJun 8, 2018

Although the 2013 Kentucky Derby is still a week away, there will be plenty at stake on Saturday night at Churchill Downs, as a nine-horse field competes for 34 last-minute Derby points in this weekend's Derby Trial Stakes.

Capo Bastone is one of the top horses being projected to win Saturday's race and earn 20 points toward May 4's Run for the Roses, but he's expected to face a stiff challenge from Zee Bros, Officer Alex, Forty Tales and Ruble, among others.

Regardless of the result, horse racing fans will get a good look at some of the top thoroughbreds that could potentially be lining up at next weekend's Kentucky Derby.

Predictions

Saturday night's Derby Trial Stakes looks to be a fun, wide-open race, as a handful of the nine horses could potentially win.

Zee Bros is the odds-on favorite to claim the 20 points, but Capo Bastone might be the best bet considering his impressive third-place finish at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in Santa Anita last November.

Trained by well-known horse trainer Todd Pletcher, Capo Bastone has shown glimpses of greatness, including a year-opening victory in his allowance-optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park back in February.

I look for Capo Bastone to run hard on the dirt this weekend, ultimately edging the favorite Zee Bros slightly on Saturday night. Zee Bros has been strong as well for Hall of Fame horse trainer Bob Baffert, but with only two career races on his resume, it's hard to fall in love with Zee Bros' chances.

Another top contender, Forty Tales is sure to finish toward the top in this weekend's mile-long race.

Ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, Forty Tales will enter Saturday's event with impressive 3-1 odds to win. Still, he's coming off a disappointing fifth-place finish in March's Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park, which has cast some doubt on his chances this weekend.

As for Titletown Five, the ninth-place finish in last month's Louisiana Derby is a bit concerning and so is his one win in six career starts.

That said, I'm predicting Capo Bastone to win Saturday's Derby Trial Stakes, with Zee Bros and Forty Tales finishing second and third respectively, each picking up some Derby points on the final weekend in April.
