NFL Draft 2013: Teams to Watch in Round 2
While the first round of the 2013 NFL draft is over, the second round is set to start on Friday night, and there are plenty of teams to pay attention to. Here are four of the top squads to keep an eye on.
1. San Francisco 49ers
The defending NFC champions have two picks in the second round. They will draft 61st overall as part of their normal draft standing. But the team also has the 34th overall pick from the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the deal it made for quarterback Alex Smith.
The 49ers are already having a good draft early on, having picked up safety Eric Reid out of LSU in the first round. They picked Reid 18th overall after swapping first-round picks with the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers also gave the Cowboys their third-round pick.
Nate Davis of USA Today has the 49ers targeting tight end Zach Ertz out of Stanford with that 34th pick in his latest mock draft. Ertz is a quality tight end and could be one of the best available prospects in the second round.
Just a few months removed from appearing in the Super Bowl, the 49ers are already bolstering their team with three picks in the first two rounds. It appears that the team is on a great track to getting even better than it was a season ago.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars only have one pick in the second round, but it's the first one.
And with so many quality players still on the board, it's anybody's best guess as to which direction the Jaguars will go.
The team has needs at the quarterback position. Geno Smith, Matt Barkley and Ryan Nassib are all on the board. USA Today has Jacksonville picking up, surprisingly, Nassib out of Syracuse. Pro Football Talk's Evan Silva tweeted a rumor from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that the new-look squad will pick the Orange's superstar quarterback if he's available.
With Smith already being an unhappy camper by not being drafted in the first round, smoke may very well come out of his ears if the Jaguars pass on him in favor of Nassib.
3. Cincinnati Bengals
After drafting Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert in the first round, the Cincinnati Bengals will draft twice in the second round.
The Bengals hold their 53rd pick as well as the 37th pick from the Oakland Raiders.
The team that earned a wild-card berth in the playoffs last season still has needs at running back and safety.
With Eddie Lacy, the running back out of Alabama, still available, the Bengals may waste no time in addressing that need in the second round.
As for their need at safety, the best two on the board right now are Jonathan Cyprien and D.J. Swearinger. USA Today has the Bengals picking up Swearinger with that 53rd pick.
4. Arizona Cardinals
While the Cardinals only draft once in the second round, their 38th pick could be the most intriguing.
The Cardinals are in need of a quarterback, and there's a possibility that both Geno Smith and Matt Barkley could be on the board.
USA Today has the Philadelphia Eagles picking up Smith with the 35th pick. But if the Eagles don't address that need for a quarterback in the second round, the Cardinals could be salivating at the opportunity to have the choice of two prospects once thought to be first-rounders.
