Manti Te'o's Best Fits After Going Undrafted on Day 1
The first round of the 2013 NFL draft is officially in the books, as 32 players have gone from prospects to rookies. Through all of the madness, however, there was one blatant omission from the first round, as embattled Notre Dame inside linebacker Manti Te'o went undrafted.
The question is, where are Te'o best and most realistic fits on Day 2?
There are critics who will claim that Te'o doesn't deserve to be drafted in the second round. There are also those supporters who believe that he should have come off of the board during the middle to late first round.
Unfortunately, where he should have gone is irrelevant—it's now on to where he will go.
Jacksonville Jaguars (Second Round, Pick 2)
The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the market for a quarterback, specifically after Geno Smith fell into the second round. With that being said, if the Jaguars are to wrongfully pass on Smith, Manti Te'o is their next best option.
Their lack of reliable linebackers is a major reason why.
Te'o has the versatility to line up in the middle or play on the weak side due to his instincts and lateral capabilities. For a team that is of a rather low-profile, Te'o's high-profile nature might also be good for publicity.
Like it or not, that is a factor.
The Jaguars would be senseless to pass up on Geno Smith in the second round, but Te'o is an intriguing option. He can step in as a starter from Day 1, and the Jags are in dire need of improvement on defense.
Again, Smith is the rational option, but Te'o fits well in Jacksonville.
Oakland Raiders (Second Round, Pick 3)
The Oakland Raiders are a team in need of two things that Manti Te'o can claim to be. The first is a quality linebacker, and the other is a high-character player that can stay out of trouble and put it all on the field.
Say what you will about his online dating tactics, but Te'o fits both of those billings.
Te'o is not the elite athlete that Oakland loves to place on the defensive side of the ball, but they have an undeniable need for an improvement in their linebacker corps. Not only can Te'o play the ball better than average, but he has the knack for the ball that Oakland needs.
While Oakland could stand to improve its defensive line, this pick is all about value, and Te'o has the most of it at this stage.
Te'o is a low-risk pick that can be the on-field warrior that Oakland has lacked with its recent draft choices. Instead of run-ins with the law, Te'o will only brush up with the ball when errant throws are made.
Te'o may not be a franchise player, but he is an every-down guy who can help lead a young defense.
Buffalo Bills (Second Round, Picks 9 & 16)
The Buffalo Bills shocked the world during the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, trading out of the No. 8 slot to pick up the No. 16, No. 46, No. 78 and No. 222 draft selections from the St. Louis Rams. With the 16th overall draft choice, they selected quarterback EJ Manuel.
Seeing as the Bills own the ninth and 16th picks in the second round, don't be shocked to see them surprise again by drafting Manti Te'o.
Te'o could fill in either as an inside or weak side linebacker for the Bills, improving their pass defense and attacking the run. While Te'o's straight-line speed is limited, he's an instinctive player who can make plays on the ball.
That's exactly what the Bills need.
Te'o is a low-risk selection at this stage of the draft and should shine behind a quality defensive line. He can get into the running lanes, defend the pass and even step up against the run.
Te'o won't outrun or overpower you, but his instincts and ability to play the ball would be welcome in Buffalo.
