Everyone in the league knew what needed to be done, especially Sean Avery's teammates. Tortorella finally relived the Ranger players of the weight they had been carrying, and took Avery out of the lineup for Game Five tonight.
Avery took four unnecessary penalties and a misconduct in Game Three, helping the Washington Capitals get back into the series. He seemed determined to give them every opportunity to come back in Game Four, taking two stupid penalties in the third period, one with three minutes to go and his teammates hanging onto a one-goal lead.
The benching could last just one game, or it could be much more serious. There was only one team in the league who would take a chance on Avery, even though they had to pay only half his contract.
Tortorella of course believed that Avery should have been kicked out of the league after his many unsportsmanlike incidents, but was forced to take the little pest by order of GM Glen Sather.
This is the moment that everyone expected when Avery was signed. He will now be on a very short leash that could end with him being yanked out of the league altogether over the summer.
