Jordi Alba Throws Ball into Arjen Robben's Face with Extreme Care
April 24, 2013
I don’t know, guys. Do you think it was deliberate?
Barcelona’s Jordi Alba made no attempt to hide his feelings toward Arjen Robben Tuesday when he grabbed the ball and offered it up directly into the Bayern Munich forward’s face.
Barcelona had spent the entire match on the wrong end of a brutalizing attack. As time wound down in second half, Barca was facing a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of the German club, and Alba in particular was feeling sore about the way things had gone.
Earlier in the game, Alba ran into a hard pick set in the box by Thomas Muller—a pick that occurred after the Barcelona defender was faked out of his shoes by Robben. Assisted by the screen from Muller, Robben snuck in another goal for Bayern.
Throwing the ball into an opponent's face is a poor idea, and Alba truly couldn’t have chosen a worse time or place to do it. With incredible calm, he deliberately tossed it into Robben’s face in front of the entire Bayern Munich bench as the 89th minute passed on the game clock.
A .GIF of the incident, for your consideration:
Not one to pass up on an easy yellow card for the opposition, Robben played the bit up, staggering backwards from the ball as if he’d just taken a kettle ball weight to the nose. Referees responded quickly to Alba’s toss, awarding him a yellow card.
A card wouldn’t be the end of Barcelona’s problems, however. Alba had been booked in two prior games against PSG and Celtic, and as a result, will not be available to play in Barca’s return leg of the Champions League semifinal against Bayern Munich.
