Reds-Bengals: Which Cincinnati Team Has the Better Program?

Kyle StrittholtApr 24, 2009

Right now Cincinnati is desperately looking for their two-star programs to do a better job of representing their city. Both have struggled to win games and this year they’re looking to flip their programs from losers to winners.

So who has the better program?

Reds Fans vs. Bengals Fans

There are a lot of fans for both teams and they have to be loyal to follow these programs. But who has the most loyal fans?

When it comes to being sold-out I think the Bengals have had more ticket sales than the Reds. Football is only one day of the week to where baseball is sometimes six. More people will go to football games just because of the excitement of the sport.

Bengals fans also follow their team more because they’re easier to follow. As I’ve said before there are more Reds games than Bengals which means it’s easier to follow how the Bengals are doing.

Another reason is because you have to have cable to watch the Reds, to where football is on regular television.

I do have to say Reds fans are more loyal just because the Bengals have lost a lot of fans with their arrests and countless mistakes. More people are sick of watching the Bengals, and they can’t watch the Reds enough to be that tired of them.

Marvin Lewis vs. Dusty Baker

Marvin Lewis has 46 wins and 49 losses with one tie in his career as head coach of the Bengals. He has a win percentage of .484.

Dusty Baker has won 74 and lost 88 in his career with the Reds, but has a history of being a great manger for other teams. Altogether he has won 1,259 games and lost 1,115. Baker has a win percentage of .457 with the Reds and .521 overall.

When you look at what each has done for their current teams I think Lewis is the better coach because he ended the longest drought in the NFL for not making it to the playoffs.

I do think Dusty Baker will have a better season than Lewis and already has looked very good so far this season.

Joey Votto vs. Carson Palmer

Carson Palmer has been more successful for his team because he led his team to the playoffs and has been voted to the Pro Bowl on numerous occasions. Joey Votto is currently having a great season for the Reds, but he has yet to take the team to the next level.

Palmer is more vital to his team because he plays one of the most important positions in sports. It takes him to play great for his team to win. Votto is important because he plays offense and defense so he has a lot of responsibility, but still not as important as Palmer.

I think Votto will perform better this season because of his hot start and is a huge part of their success this season. Palmer has lost his main target in Cincinnati—TJ Houshmandzadeh— and it will take him longer to have success than Votto.

Chris Henry vs. Pete Rose

When you look at what Chris Henry has done, it doesn’t compare to what Pete Rose did. Henry has made himself look like an idiot with his actions, but Rose gambled on the sport he played. The similar action in the 1919 World Series defaced baseball, and Rose almost made it happen again.

Rose was one of the most talented hitters in baseball, and Henry has more drops than catches, so it’s safe to say Rose was far more talented and meant more to his team.

Reds vs. Bengals

The Reds have the better program. They've been to nine World Series and won five titles. The Bengals have been to two Super Bowls and lost them both to the 49ers.

The Reds have a more talented team this season and I think they will go farther than the Bengals. They have already been looking fantastic with their 9-6 start. I think if their pitching keeps up they’ll have a better shot of the playoffs.
