John Sullen: Things You Need to Know About the Auburn Guard

Bryn SwartzJun 8, 2018

With the NFL draft finally playing out, hundreds of players are anticipating a selection in one of the remaining six rounds, allowing an opportunity to pursue a career in the National Football League.

Auburn guard John Sullen is not one of the more well-known players, but on draft day, there's a very good chance that he hears his name called in one of the middle-to-late rounds.

Background

Full Name: John Sullen

Hometown: Auburn, Ala.

High School: Auburn

Major: History

Year: Senior

You literally cannot find a more homegrown player than offensive guard John Sullen, who was born and raised in Auburn. He attended high school in Auburn and went to college no more than a few miles from his hometown.

Statistics and Analysis

2 of 4

John Sullen is a massive offensive lineman, standing 6'6'' and weighing more than 335 pounds. That puts him among the biggest players in the National Football League. He has tremendous strength and is particularly impressive in short-yardage situations. Sullen has experience playing both guard positions.

His weakness, however, lies with the quicker defenders as is customary for massive linemen. He's also not very effective pulling, making it very unlikely that Sullen could ever succeed as an offensive tackle.

Interesting Facts

Sullen was touted as the 63rd-ranked offensive tackle in the nation as a high schooler, according to ESPN.com/Scouts Inc.

He collected 55 pancakes blocks during his high school career.

According to Rob Rang of CBSSports.com, Sullen is most similar to Chicago Bears' offensive guard Chilo Rachal, for his ability to dominate the power run game and struggle against high-speed pass-rushers. Rachal was a second-round draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers in 2008 and has started 46 of the 64 games he has played over the past five seasons.
