Jake Stoneburner: Video Highlights for Former Ohio State TE

Jun 8, 2018

Jake Stoneburner had a storied career at Ohio State before deciding to make the transition to the NFL

He is not the largest tight end prospect at 6'4" and 250 pounds, but his collegiate career speaks volumes about how he could used at the NFL level—whether that's from the traditional tight end position or split out as a wide receiver.

To his credit, Stoneburner's time at OSU was marred by the actions of those around him. Despite having to play with a variety of different quarterbacks, he emerged as the go-to option for each one—as a prototypical tight end should.

Let's take a few moments to break down some of the more impressive highlights from his time at OSU.

1st-Down Catch vs. Penn State

1 of 6

This is the type of play you see the most important tight ends in the NFL make on a regular basis.

On third down, Stoneburner catches a pass well short of the first-down marker and proceeds to carry multiple defenders with him until he picks up the first for his team.

An obviously impressive feat of strength, but Stoneburner's precise route running and ability to rip the ball out of the air in a crowd are equally impressive.

Though it's no touchdown, it's likely a play that raised the collective eyebrows of NFL scouts everywhere.

TD Split out as WR vs. Penn State

2 of 6

Here is an area where Stoneburner may be able to cause some problems at the NFL level—split out as a wide receiver.

The above highlight is a simple play for the quarterback. Stoneburner runs a basic route behind the defensive back and is so much taller that the defender does not have a shot at breaking up the play.

After that, Stoneburner is able to accelerate to his top speed quickly and reach the end zone for a big score.

Stoneburner is a bit of a tweener prospect in this way. He could have just as easily lined up as a tight end and ran the same route.

Touchdown Reception vs. Akron

3 of 6

This time, Stoneburner releases from the tight end position and just overpowers the defensive back tasked with covering him should he take off down the field.

He is too big, strong and quick for the defensive back and also smart enough to find the weak point of the defense.

It's a solid throw from the quarterback, but an even better job by Stoneburner of turning the corner after bringing the ball in, making sure he stays in the field of play and taking the last few strides before crossing into the end zone.

Screen Pass for TD vs. Nebraska

4 of 6

The highlight above is yet another way Stoneburner can hurt defenses which are not adequately prepared for his versatile skill set.

This time, he is the target of a screen pass.

The blocking is perfect and Stoneburner uses his surprising agility to sprint into the end zone before the Nebraska defense truly knows what is happening.

For a man of his size, Stoneburner's speed on this play should make fans and scouts alike take notice.

Red-Zone TD vs. Akron

5 of 6

Of course, a college tight end prospect will never succeed in the NFL if he is not a threat to score every time his team is in the red zone.

Stoneburner can be a true red-zone threat.

As you can see in the play above, he uses a nice combination of size and speed to release from the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped and get to a point in the end zone where only he can reel the pass into his hands.

The concentration and awareness to bring the ball in and remain in the field of play are impressive.

Red-Zone Threat vs. Penn State

6 of 6

Stoneburner is tasked with doing the same thing as on the last slide, except the field is reversed.

Unsurprisingly, the result is the same.

Stoneburner releases from the line of scrimmage and runs along the back of the end zone. He is able to break away from defenders once more thanks to his speed.

This is but one of many examples where defenses were either not ready or unable to account for the challenge Stoneburner presents in the red zone.
