Benson Henderson vs Gilbert Melendez: Round by Round Recap and Analysis

The UFC lightweight championship is on the wire Saturday night, when belt-holder Benson Henderson takes on Gilbert Melendez, a champion himself in the now-defunct Strikeforce promotion who is making his Octagon debut.

Round 1

They touch gloves and we're off. John McCarthy is the referee.

Bendo takes the center of the cage. Melendez lands first, a leg kick. They now trade leg kicks. Hard left hand from Bendo.

Melendez catches a Bendo kick and they go to the ground, with Melendez immediately and wisely touching the ground to avoid the same up kick that broke Frankie Edgar's nose.

Melendez has him pushed against the fence and gives Bendo a knee as Bendo stands. Three minute mark now.

More feeling out now, and another kick caught by Melendez. Now they clinch up and Benson has him against the fence.

Melendez checks a Bendo head kick. Heavy leg kick from Bendo a few seconds later. Melendez moves in with a one-two and then a leg kick. He catches yet another leg kick and then a big knee to the body.

At the final bell Bendo throws a leg kick and for the fourth time Melendez catches it. He dumps him on his backside.

Round 2

Bendo takes the center of the cage. Another punch/leg kick combination by Melendez. Bendo scoots away with Melendez in pursuit. Another kick caught by Melendez and then a body shot.

Bendo looking tentative now, flicking out a jab but maybe in a feeling-out phase still. Another leg kick caught but Bendo staves off a trip attempt. 

Halfway point of the round and not much is happening. Bendo pushes forward with punches but they glance away. Another kick caught and Gilbert follows up quickly with punches. 

Inside leg kick from Melendez. Big striking exchange in the center of the Octagon. Knee from Bendo and then an elbow. A knee defended by Melendez. Momentum might be with the champ now. 

My score: 10-10

Round 3

Third round and both fighters still looking fairly fresh. Strike counter on the screen has it 38 to 35 for Bendo on significant strikes landed. 

Huge leg kick from Bendo chops Melendez down to the mat. He springs up and Bendo meets him with a combination. Big right from Melendez as Bendo rushes in. Then another big right. Bendo looks bemused.

Bendo goes for a takedown and sort of gets it but Melendez wall-walking back up. Knees to the body and then body punches exchanged. A very close fight thus far.

Melendez lands a left and defends a takedown from Bendo. Bendo switches stances and then throws a kick, like a switch kick but slow developing. They clinch against the fence. Bendo trying for a takedown but nothing doing. Knees and kicks exchanged. This one's starting to get dirty, in a good way.

Kick to the midsection from Melendez. Huge leg kick from Bendo sends them both down right at the end.

My score: 10-9 Melendez (30-28 Melendez overall)

Round 4

Bendo fires a high kick but it bounces off. Inside leg kick a few seconds later. Melendez throwing his jab now more often. Another leg kick caught by Melendez, then a knee from Bendo.

Another leg kick from Bendo. Melendez sprawls to avoid a takedown and that was nicely done. Those leg kicks have to be adding up, though.

Bendo gets inside and throws an elbow. Melendez working off his jab. Nice combination from the challenger.

Another big leg kick drops Melendez and Bendo tries to get his back, has it for a second and then Gilbert's back up. Bendo landing more now and Gilbert's noticeably slowing down. Forty seconds remaining in the round.

Gilbert lands a good body shot and then another. Big straight right and they clinch up. 

My score: 10-9 Henderson (39-38 Melendez)

Round 5

In between rounds, Henderson's corner tells him that Gilbert's leg is hurt and to attack that leg. 

Final round begins and Melendez catches yet another leg kick. Henderson whiffs on a high kick. An inside leg kick wobbles Melendez and those are really taking their toll now.

Melendez swinging hard and trying to stay aggressive. Bendo as cool as a cucumber though and he lands a short combo. Bendo misses a front kick but then lands a leg kick.

Leg kick again at the 1:30 mark. Melendez lands a strong knee to the body. They exchange in the center. A right from Gilbert. Melendez looks energized for the final push. Thirty seconds remaining now. Both men swinging heavy but nothing connecting. A jab from Melendez lands. That's it.

My score: 10-9 Henderson 
Overall score: 48-48. I've got this scored as a draw. We'll see what the judges say.
