Dallas Cowboys Looking to Draft a Safety
It’s arguably the greatest sports event of the year that doesn’t involve an actual game. What happens on draft weekend may either build your team into a perennial playoff contender or destroy it.
Every fan has a wish list. We all know what our team needs and we all have strong opinions on who we should draft to fill those needs. Regardless of what happens this weekend, fans of each team will be able to enter the draft with hopes of solid talent being added to the much needed gaps in our team’s respective rosters.
That, of course, doesn’t include Cowboy fans.
The Dallas Cowboys first pick of this year’s draft will be the 51st. Owner Jerry Jones traded the first, third, and sixth pick in this year’s draft to the Detroit Lions for former Texas Longhorn wide receiver Roy Williams.
The trade gave the Cowboys a quality No. 1 receiver, allowing Jones to cut Terrell Owens. Owens, regardless of on-field talent, proved to be more or less of a nightmare regarding team chemistry and is now in Buffalo and off the Cowboys radar. Williams underachieved last year, now in a position to be the lead receiver in Dallas, fans hope that his new role will prove beneficial.
Regardless of Roy William’s potential, the receiver position is a key need. Looking at the board, any receivers that would be worth using the 51st pick should already be off the board. Jerry Jones, however has stated that the receiver position is not their main focus this weekend.
Cowboy fans can hope that Jones’ feelings on the matter would only imply that they are searching for a safety. The Cowboys are in need of a quality starting safety after cutting Roy Williams (a different Roy Williams).
If there is value at the safety position when the Cowboys clock starts with the 51st pick, than it would be my hope that fans will look at the Cowboys day one as a success. Hopefully Sean Smith, the CB/S out of Utah will still be on the board.
For those wondering if Jones will trade up into the first round, it seems unlikely. Too much would have to be given up and the money used to sign a first rounder will be needed to structure a new deal for Demarcus Ware.
