Look at 2014 Michigan Wolverines QB (President) Wilton Speight's Cabinet

Devin Gardner says that playing quarterback at the University of Michigan is something like being President.

Well, if that’s true, then consider Shane Morris the VP. And, to stay on track with the whole political thing, Wilton Speight, Michigan’s 2014 quarterback commit, is the Speaker of the House.

If history has told us anything, it’s this: The President needs an effective cabinet in order to properly execute his office duties.

That’s where the current and prospective wide receivers come into play—the Secretaries of (Ball) Transportation? What about the Secretaries of (Offensive) Energy?

OK. I’ll stop.

Looking at what Speight has to work with may seem a bit early.

And it is—by about a year, actually.

However, in light of a recent report via MLive.com’s Kyle Meinke, the time to assess who Speight will either arrive with or join at Michigan becomes increasingly important. Speight has been ranked as the No. 8 overall quarterback of 2014, ESPN writer Tom Luginbill’s class that’s “down a little.”

Michigan coaches like Fred Jackson, Al Borges, Greg Mattison and Brady Hoke have been working round the clock (during appropriate periods, mind you) in an attempt to bring the best-of-the-best to Ann Arbor.

So far, Hoke’s been successful in securing top-10 classes. He’s on the cusp of a top-five class for 2014 if he continues at his rampant clip.

Michigan already gained the commitment of Grand Rapids Christian sensation Drake Harris, who could possibly be Michigan’s first 5-star-rated wide receiver.

And at Speight’s pace, Michigan could have a legitimate 5-star quarterback in the 6’6”, 220-pound phenom out of Richmond’s The Collegiate School (Va.). Morris was once rated 5-star, but his stock took a slight tumble during his senior year—he battled mononucleosis and his overall ranking suffered.

With Speight looking downfield to Harris, the Wolverines have a lethal combination that will strike Big Ten secondaries each Saturday. But Harris isn’t the only one who’ll be in the mix.

Michigan loaded up with big-bodied wideouts in 2012 and 2013, so the 2014 class’ recruits will be the icing on the cake.

Speight’s Cabinet

Drake Harris (6’4”, 180 pounds, Grand Rapids Christian)

As mentioned above, Harris is among the best receivers in his class. Rated the No. 4 overall by 247Sports.com, Harris’ size is ideal for Borges deep-ball threats. He’s fast. He’s elusive. He’s strong.

He’s what Michigan receivers will be like from this point forward.

Harris carries a rating of 97 from 247Sports; he’s on the brink of catching a 5-star grade.

 

Jaron Dukes (6’5”, 197 pounds, Columbus Marion-Franklin [Ohio])

Dukes, a 2013 signee, should bring an SEC-type feel to Michigan. As far as jump-ball targets go, Dukes may be Speight’s top choice. With his height, Dukes will tower over most Big Ten defensive backs by five or more inches. He doesn’t have blazing speed, but his 4.6-second, 40-yard dash paired with his frame will make for plenty of highlight connections with Speight.

Da’Mario Jones (6’2”, 195 pounds, Westland John Glenn [Mich.])

Like Dukes, Jones is a modestly rated 84 by 247Sports. That figures to be a 3-star ranking, same as Dukes, who carries an 87 rating. Jones is one of the faster wide receiver recruits for Wolverines in 2013; he runs a fleet 4.4-second, 40-yard dash.

Speight’s Advisors

Sophomore Amara Darboh has turned heads in spring practice. Gardner has the utmost confidence in Darboh, who would likely be a senior once Speight sees any type of action. Inheriting a proven senior is the best-case scenario for a young Wolverines quarterback.

"He can do everything well," Gardner said about Darboh (via MLive.com’s Kyle Meinke). "He can shake guys in the short-range game, and he can go deep."

Along with Harris (and other 2014 commits), Speight will have an arsenal of all arsenals. Imagine Darboh, perhaps underrated at the moment, as a brick wall-like, 6’3”, 220-pound (he’s about 215 right now) go-to senior. Csont'e York, Jones and Dukes will only add to the possibilities.

Michigan is creating a corps of wideouts that should rival any program in the country. And while it’s 12 or so months too early to really cast projections about Speight, it’s difficult not to, given his level of talent and the talent that he’ll be surrounded by at Michigan.
