It's Not About Winning Or Losing: It's How You Entertain

Daris BrownApr 23, 2009

At seven feet tall and 445 pounds, there is no one who lives up to the name Big Show like Paul Wight. As big and as massive as he is, I was a bit disturbed when he picked up the 5'6" 175lbs (soaking wet) Rey Mysterio like an ant, before KO-ing him for the easy win.

Realistically that's exactly what would happen should the two have met in a dark ally, but not in my world. Not in the WWE Universe. Rey Mysterio's the IC champ, and his name is sketched in history with the likes of Mr. Perfect, Pat Patterson and Ricky Steamboat.

He shouldn't be jobbing in a 30 second match, no matter how big the opponent.

Last night I was enlightened. Wrestling isn't about winning or losing. It's all about the entertainment.

It's a lesson I learned a long time ago, it's nothing new really. As fans, we get so tied up into the moment we sometimes scream foul for no reason. Which if you think about it is the greatest compliment.

We believe in these guys so much that they can make the impossible possible. Yeah, we cherish the belt and it's history. At the end of the day it's all about entertainment.

Not unlike Edge, whose gone through eight title reigns in less than three years, it's never about winning or losing. At his pace, Edge will have a record setting 53 world title victories when he retires.

So what? That's not why he'll be remembered. Fans will chant his name on Hall of Fame night because he was one of the most hated heels of his time. They'll chant because he's entertaining.

Take Goldberg for instance. Did his career take off because he had an impressive undefeated streak. No. It's because people loved to watch him break wrestlers in half with his spear.

I mean he's speared the Rock so hard, someone in row 210 seat F got hit in the head with one of the Rock's boots. The man then jumped up an applauded, because he was entertained.

Even the UFC has grasped onto the entertainment factor. Dana White has said on numerous occasions the reason why some fighters are brought back despite a losing record is because the fans have fun watching them in the octagon.

So as fans, why don't we take a second to sit back and enjoy ourselves. It's okay to get caught up in the moment, but never forget about the big picture.

I can't even tell you who had the most wins or losses for their perspective company during the height of the Monday Night Wars.

I can tell you about the time when Austin doused Vince and company with a truck load of beer. That was a lot of beer. Heck, some of you will get drunk just picturing McMahon doing his freestyle stroke in the center of the ring.

Remember the time when Sting dropped from the rafters and pointed his bat at Hogan while J.J. Dillion pretended to be dumbfounded on what or who Sting wanted.

So next time when you're about to punch another hole in your wall, possibly after seeing Punk cash in on the MITB only to lose it six weeks later, just remember it's only entertainment.

Check out Hit The Ropes Radio next week as we interview WWE Hall of Famer Superfly Jimmy Snuka. Plus,TNA prizes, our second attempt at Turnbuckle 2 Turnbuckle 3 and more. Wednesday at 6 p.m. Eastern.
