NFL DRAFT: Please, Wake Me When it's Over!
I have nothing against this year's crop of NFL hopefuls, but I would like to be excused from the table, I mean television, during the draft proceedings at Radio City Music Hall this year.
The way I see it, regardless of whether I watch the program it will not change the draft order or whether my team gets the player I think they should take. No, at the end of the day the same scenario will play itself out hundreds of times over the two day process.
I am sure Roger Goodell is a nice guy, but watching him trace back and forth to the podium, announcing which team selects which player is not what I call compelling television. Even worse, how about listening to a bunch of pompous sports commentators and draft experts, trying to predict the next move and discussing which player is the best fit Dallas or Denver or if the team should just take the always popular, "best available athlete."
It is just plain nauseating.
A new phenomenon in the draft day discussion is the concept of character. Teams are now placing a greater value on the quality of the person than they are on the quality of the player's abilities. For this, they should be commended.
However, and this is the bigger picture take on character, not every team has gotten the memo. If a player has a character issue and is still allowed to be a part of the draft, then teams ignoring him because of his character issue do so at their own peril.
Take Percy Harvin for instance. If he is on your draft board and available at your draft spot, are you really going to pass up on him for a player of lesser talents? If I am not mistaken the goal of each NFL team is to win as many games as possible.
Teams' chances of winning are enhanced with Percy Harvin and Andre Smith. If you ignore them, don't be surprised if your division rival selects the bad character guy and uses him to pummel you both at home and away.
Bottom line: I care about character, however, if the guys transgressions are not sufficient to keep him out of the league, then I want my team to draft him. We have all made mistakes in our lives. So draft experts and commentators, please save the holier than thou sanctimonious ramblings.
Enjoy the draft sportsminded Americans! I will join the discussion on or araound Monday, April 27 under some headline that reads "Team by team draft recap."
