Andres Romero Looks to Defend His Title at the Zurich Classic

27-year-old Andres Romero will look to defend his title at this week’s Zurich Classic which begins today in New Orleans.

Romero is coming off a strong 2008 season which was good enough to earn him Rookie of the Year honors on the PGA Tour.

But, the 2009 season has thus far not panned out in the way Romero would have hoped for.

Romero, who hails from Tucuman, Argentina, earned over $2 million on the PGA Tour last year which included a win and four top-25 finishes.

Of course, Romero would have liked to have gotten off to a better start in 2009, but his slow start is probably not concerning the young Argentinean too much.

Romero began last season with three consecutive missed cuts and did not manage to finish inside of the top-30 at any event prior to his win at the Zurich Classic.

Romero is a player with an abundance of talent but at just 27-years-old, he is still a little bit raw and can be very streaky at times.

Aside from a third place finish at the Northern Trust Open earlier in the year, Romero has yet to really get his game going in 2009.

He currently ranks outside of the top-100 on tour in driving accuracy, greens in regulation, and putts per hole, which clearly demonstrates just why Romero has not been achieving the results he would have been looking for following his rookie of the year campaign in 2008.

As mentioned earlier, Romero did not really turn on his game until around this time last year, and maybe watching fellow countryman Angel Cabrera bring a green jacket home to Argentina less than two weeks ago will provide Romero with the motivation and confidence he has thus far been lacking in 2009.

It’s only a matter of time before a player as talented as Romero gets his game going, and like last year, the Zurich Classic might just provide that spring board again in 2009.
