Miguel Maysonet: 5 Things You Need to Know About the Former Stony Brook RB

Zach KruseJun 2, 2018

Teams attempting to unearth the next Alfred Morris in the 2013 NFL draft might want to take a long look at Stony Brook's Miguel Maysonet.

A three-year force for the Seawolves at the FCS level, Maysonet enters the draft with very little fanfare but an impressive portfolio of rushing production.

While not becoming a full-time starter until his senior season, Maysonet still rushed for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns during his collegiate career. Some draft evaluators are now comparing him to Morris, who was a late-round pick last April but went on to rush for over 1,600 yards for the Washington Redskins.

In the following slides, we'll provide everything you need to know about Maysonet—a potential diamond in the rough for the 2013 draft.

Full Name: Miguel Maysonet

Birthday: December 13, 1989

Hometown: Riverhead, New York

High School: Riverhead

Major: Health Science

Year: Senior

Born in Puerto Rico, Maysonet (school profile here) moved to New York and quickly became a prep force in the Empire State.

While a letter-winner in track, lacrosse and basketball at Riverhead High School, Maysonet was at his very best on the football field. He ended his high school career as a three-time all-county and two-time All-Long Island selection in football.

During his senior season, Maysonet was named Gatorade's New York State Player of the Year after rushing for 2,328 yards and 33 touchdowns. Riverhead finished 12-0.

Maysonet would originally sign with Hofstra University, but he spent just one season there before transferring to Stony Brook.

A health science major, Maysonet enters the NFL after exhausting his collegiate eligibility.

Statistics

Few running backs—save for maybe Wisconsin's Montee Ball—will enter the 2013 NFL draft with more impressive collegiate statistics than those posted by Maysonet at Stony Brook.

In his three years, Maysonet rushed for more yards than any other player in Stony Brook and Big South Conference history.

During the 2010 season, Maysonet made just two starts but still rushed for 1,128 yards and 12 touchdowns. The next season, he made nine starts and finished with 1,633 yards and 15 scores.

Last season marked Maysonet's best statistical year.

Given a full 13 starts in 2012, Maysonet rushed for 1,964 yards—the 11th most in FCS history—and 21 touchdowns. He was named the runner-up for the Walter Payton award, given to the most outstanding FCS player.

Maysonet would finish his Stony Brook career with 4,725 yards on 695 carries (6.8 yards/carry) and 48 touchdowns over 37 games and 24 starts. Add in his 422 yards and three touchdowns at Hofstra, and Maysonet actually finished his collegiate career with more than 5,000 yards and 51 touchdowns.

Observations

5 of 5

Quite possibly the most generous NFL comparison for Maysonet has come from NFL.com, who likened him to former FIU and current Washington Redskins running back Alfred Morris.

"

Maysonet's collegiate career was abnormal, but he was extremely consistent on the field. While on the path to not missing a game in the last three seasons, Maysonet set multiple records due to an aggressive and decisive running style. He isn't flashy and hasn't shown passing down ability because of limited repetitions, but he could produce as a ball carrier if given an opportunity.

"

Morris, a sleeper from last season's draft, won the starting job in Washington and finished 2012 with over 1,600 rushing yards.

CBS Sports, who ranks Maysonet as the 21st best running back in the 2013 class, projects the former Stony Brook star as a seventh-round pick or undrafted free agent.
