Johnny Adams: Video Highlights for Former Michigan State CB

Jun 8, 2018

To get a feel for what kind of football player Michigan State cornerback Johnny Adams is, you need only go back to his time at Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio, where Adams often lined up as a defensive end during his senior year.

At 160 pounds.

The Spartans didn't ask Adams to do that in East Lansing, but what the 5'10", 185-pounder did do was intercept 11 passes over four seasons and get named an All Big-Ten performer three times.

Let's take a look at some of the highlights from his standout collegiate career.

Reading the Route vs. Central Michigan (2012)

Those 11 interceptions over Adams' four years with the Spartans earned him a reputation as a ball hawk, and that reputation was well-deserved.

In this highlight from a September victory over Central Michigan, Adams does an excellent job of sniffing out the play and jumping the route.

Not only that, but Adams also finishes the play, displaying good hands in making the leaping interception.

Pick-Six vs. Purdue (2008)

That ability not only to read the play, but also make the interception, is one that Johnny Adams demonstrated early in his career at Michigan State.

In a November win over the Purdue Boilermakers during Adams' freshman year, the youngster once again did a great job of not only jumping in front of the receiver, but also of hauling in the pick.

This time, Adams finished off the play in a big way, racing 40 yards for a Michigan State touchdown.

In fact, Adams hands' are so good that the Spartans toyed with the idea of playing Adams some at wide receiver, as they did in the 2012 spring game.

Defending the Run vs. Notre Dame (2012)

As you might expect from a cornerback who used to line up at defensive end, Johnny Adams isn't shy about getting his helmet dirty.

Adams was solid in run support for the Spartans, especially for a player of his size, tallying 11 tackles for loss over his collegiate career.

Adams showed off that prowess in run support in a loss to Notre Dame last year, flying in from the edge to haul down running back Cierre Wood for a loss.

Rushing the Passer vs. Michigan (2011)

4 of 5

The best fit for Johnny Adams in the NFL is likely at slot corner. In a 2011 win over archrival Michigan, Adams displayed not only the ability to cover receivers from that spot, but also that he can get after the quarterback.

On the highlight shown above, Adams blitzes from the slot, and by the time quarterback Denard Robinson sees him coming, there's nothing he can do.

A Versatile Player: 2013 NFL Scouting Combine

As we've shown in this article, Johnny Adams is a rather versatile cornerback, and that versatility did not go unnoticed by draft experts at this year's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

A turf toe injury limited Adams' ability to work out in Indy, but he was still able to participate in the 40-yard dash and bench press, posting a time of 4.48 seconds and 16 reps at 225 pounds (per NFL.com).

Despite the limited workout, Adams received praise from some in attendance at the combine, including former NFL executive Bill Polian, who explains in this video clip how Michigan State's defensive scheme helped prepare Adams for the NFL.
