This year's race took a scary turn on Monday afternoon, as there were two explosions near the finish line. From The Boston Globe on Twitter:

---End of update---

The Boston Marathon saw Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa outrace Micah Kogo of Kenya and Gebregziabher Gebremariam of Ethiopia to win Monday's famous race. The top three men were separated by just six seconds.

The United States men gave a solid showing, as Jason Hartmann replicated last year's fourth-place finish, while Daniel Tapia finished ninth and Craig Leon took 10th. Last year's winner, Wesley Korir of Kenya, finished in fifth.

On the women's side, Kenya's Rita Jeptoo won her second Boston Marathon on Monday in a time of 2:26:25, winning by 33 seconds over second-place finisher Meseret Hailu of Ethiopia.

The United States was well represented at the top of the pack, as Shalane Flanagan finished in fourth and Kara Goucher came in sixth. Here's Flanagan at the finish, via Lisa Hughes of WBZ TV:

Last year's winner, Sharon Cherop of Kenya, finished in third, while Tirfi Tsegaye of Ethiopia rounded out the top five.

Tatiana McFadden of the United States won the women's wheelchair race, while Hiroyuki Yamamoto of Japan won the event for the men.

This year's event featured far more favorable weather than last year's smoldering-hot conditions, as the Boston Marathon Twitter account noted:
