Defense Wins Championships: Will the Cavaliers Be The Champs This Year?

Kyle StrittholtApr 22, 2009

The Cavs have been recognized as the best defensive team in the NBA. They have played great defense all season as a team and was lead by LeBron James who was second in the votes for Defensive Player of the Year.

The reason the Cavs are so good on defense is because they play with such intensity, energy, and everyone works together doing their parts.

The chemistry that these players have is something special to watch; and it can remind you of past championship teams like the Lakers with Magic and Kareem, the Bulls with Pippen and Jordan. The way they stick up for each other if a harsh foul is given. This isn’t a team; it’s a brotherhood.

When you look at all the other teams in the NBA, I don’t think any are as close as this Cleveland Cavalier team is and that is why they had the best record in the NBA and it’s why they make it look so easy on the court.

There’s no question that defense is the strong point of this team. I’ve always said it doesn’t matter if you score 200 points if you give up 201. It makes no difference. And Mike Brown has done a great job emphasizing the importance of defense in this game.

With that being said I think this Cavalier team can make it all the way and win the Championship.

I expect the teams that stand in the way of Cleveland and L.A to be practice games for the Finals and I do expect them to make it there comfortably with the star loaded Celtics losing depth and no one really being a contender for these teams.

The Lakers are going to be very tough having Andrew Bynum back in the mix, and they are so good offensively, but if the Cavs can do what the Celtics did last year I think they can prosper victorious.

The Lakers have beaten the Cavs twice this season, but there is nothing like LeBron James in the playoffs. He takes his game to a whole other level.

The difference from this year and the last two years is that LeBron doesn’t have to do it all himself. He has a great supporting cast in Mo Williams, Delonte west, and Daniel Gibson.

Ben Wallace has returned after his knee injury obtained against Houston, and it is key for him to be the big defensive presence that he’s always been.

Wallace has helped the Detroit Pistons to a NBA title and the Cavs will need him to play strongly against the Lakers in the Finals.

With the Cavs being able to defend as well as they do and having some great offensive players like James and Williams, I think that the Cavaliers will be this years NBA Champs.
