Zach Line: Video Highlights for Former Southern Methodist FB

Alex RamirezJun 1, 2018

Not a lot of fullbacks are taken in the NFL draft. Only five of them are expected to be picked this year. According to CBS Sports, Zach Line is ranked third at the position and projected to be drafted in the sixth round.

Line ran a 4.77 40-yard-dash at the NFL Scouting Combine (per NFL.com), which isn't that great, but his numerous abilities make up for that. He reminds me a lot of Denver Bronco Jacob Hester.

Here are Line's top collegiate plays.

29-Yard TD Run vs. TCU

1 of 5

Playing against the fourth-ranked team in the country at the time, Line seemed up for the challenge. Although Southern Methodist lost by 17 points, Line played outstanding football.

Running for 139 yards on only 17 carries, including this touchdown burst, Line played one of his best games in college. His average of 8.2 yards per carry kept SMU in the game.

A play like this shows an acceleration that many fullbacks do not possess. His straightaway speed makes him dangerous in the backfield on draw plays.

28-Yard TD Run vs. Texas A&M

2 of 5

Line's run against Texas A&M, another top-ranked team, previews his ability to find a hole, burst through it and finish the run. He may not have great speed, but his agility and jump off the line allow him the opportunity for big plays like these.

Not only did Line have a great run, but the way he finished the play through two defenders gives him value in the NFL.

Fullbacks transitioning into running backs in the NFL are a common occurrence lately. Line has the potential to be the next Toby Gerhart or Peyton Hillis.

41-Yard TD Run vs. Memphis

3 of 5

On another breakaway run, Line extends to finish the play. His consistent effort will translate in the NFL, as he will continue to work hard and make the most of his opportunities.

Line won't begin his days at the next level with plays like this. Frankly, he won't be given the chance. However, in a few years, Line will develop into a dangerous NFL fullback.

40-Yard Run vs. UTEP

4 of 5

This 40-yard run is probably his best in college.

The three previous slides show Line's straightaway speed and ability to finish runs. This one displays how elusive he can be. He evades multiple defenders on the way to a huge gain.

Making defenders miss is a quality running backs and fullbacks need. Line is definitely not a one-trick pony.

11-Yard Run vs. Southern Mississippi

5 of 5

Yes, this is only an 11-yard run, but it shows Line's incredible strength.

We already know that he is a competitor and finishes runs. He gives a complete effort on every play he runs, but this video highlights how strong he really can be—it takes four defenders to take him down.

When speed isn't your best asset, it's good to possess the strength that Line does.
