Johan Santana lowered his ERA to 1.46 in 2-1 victory over the Brewers.

Johan Santana lowered his ERA to 1.46 in 2-1 victory over the Brewers.

Johan Santana 2-1, 1.46 pitched the Mets to a 1-0 defeat of the Brewers. The loss sank the Brewers into last place in the NL Central with a 3-8 record. Santana’s mound opponent Yovani Gallardo also pitched well pitching six scoreless innings. Santana has allowed only one earned run in 19 2/3 innings while striking out 27. Santana is leading the NL in ERA and in strikeouts.

The Mets shouldn’t have many long losing streaks if Santana continues to pitch this well. Santana leads all active starters in lifetime ERA with a 3.08 mark. Baseball-reference.com lists him 18th in strikeouts among active pitchers but nine of the pitchers on the list is either retired or on the disabled list so he is really ninth with 1607 strikeouts at the age of 30. His 9.29 strikeouts per nine innings is third behind first place Randy Johnson with a 10.67 strikeouts per nine innings and Kerry Wood with 10.40 strikeouts per nine innings.
