Dana White Should Not Question from Whence His Help Cometh

Dorothy WillisApr 21, 2009

Doesn't anyone who is a fan of Dana White ever wonder why he doesn't realize when he is being helped?

I myself have been terribly guilty of trying to help the president of the UFC by giving him advice on many occasions (in 50 articles or more).

Of course, admittedly, Mr. White has never solicited my opinions on how he handles his day to day responsibilities, but being a grandmother by nature, long before I actually became one at the age of 47, I have never been shy about offering others a helping hand.

So I am, of course, pondering why, when Anderson Silva offered him a solid gold proof to sell Ontario on MMA "not being a violent sport and worthy of having an event in their fine province," he began apologizing to everyone that the fight was not exciting enough.

Well sure, there are a lot of demanding, blood thirsty fans who were craving a blood-fest, or at least a colossal knockout to quench their blood-lust and justify dropping 50 bucks on PPV or even more to actually attend the event.

Imagine, though, looking a gift horse like that in the mouth!

Dana may wear Canadian Hockey shirts, laud praise on the cuisine, culture, and sights he sees, but when it comes to convincing the rest of Canada that MMA is a worthwhile venture for them to take a chance on...he throws it away like so much trash.

True, Anderson Silva was not fighting with the thought of promoting MMA in other Canadian provinces, but what an opportunity when arguably the best P4P fighter in the sport walks out of the cage, and neither he nor his opponent are bloodied.

What better proof could Dana White offer that MMA is a battle of skill which does not have to involve a bloodbath?

Good heavens, Dana, you didn't plan for the fight to end that way, but you should have considered it a gift from God, under the circumstances.

The eyes of all Canada were on you, waiting to decide the merits of a much maligned, relatively new sport, and you blew it.

Ironically, while you and the press were busy vilifying Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, the man you had so forcibly retired, attempted to defend the Spider; although I am sure Chuck would rather have been in his room kicking back with a strong drink as a young lovely held an ice-bag to his head.

Hesitating and considering any repercussions or the possibility of putting a good spin on a situation are not signs of weakness.

In fact, many successful businessmen—and even grandmothers—have learned not to question from whence their help cometh.
