Minnesota Vikings Seven Round Mock Draft (Big Changes) Updated, 4/20

Tanner ThomsApr 20, 2009

With only five days left until the 2009 NFL draft, several changes have been made to my latest mock draft for the Minnesota Vikings.

I won't give you a big introduction because, by now, you know the routine.

Round one: Eben Britton, Offensive Tackle, Arizona

I know I had Minnesota taking a wide receiver for the past few weeks, but for some reason, I just don't see the Vikings taking a receiver in the first round anymore.

They have a potential play-maker in Sidney Rice and a stud receiver in Bernard Berrian. Also, Visanthe Shiancoe is a very good tight end who is even making improvements over the last year.

Eben Britton will be too good to pass up at No. 22 overall.

The Vikings could also look to trade down a few picks because there is a good chance that Britton would still be there around the 26th through 30th pick.

Round two: Percy Harvin, Wide Reciever, Florida

"What!? Percy Harvin in the second round... Are you kidding me?" No, your eyes aren't playing any sort of tricks on you.

DeSean Jackson was one of the better wide receiver prospects in last year's draft and he slid to the middle of the second round. Percy Harvin is a very similar player who could suffer the same fate.

I'm sure to get comments from somebody saying how ridiculous this pick is, so feel free to do so because I will have a great rebuttle to it.

In my mind, Percy will slip into the second round due to character issues.

Round three: Captain Munnerlyn, Cornerback, South Carolina

The Vikings have a lot of depth at cornerback, but do they have great players who can start in the future?

Charles Gordon and Karl Paymah have potential to be future pro-bowl cornerbacks, but as of right now, they are strictly for depth purposes. Minnesota needs to find a definitive starter for the future.

Captain Munnerlyn is a very under-rated cornerback in a very deep class of defensive backs. I would love to grab him off the board in the third round.

***Round four selection was traded to the Houston Texans for Quarterback Sage Rosenfels***

Round five: Edwin Williams, Center, Maryland

I haven't heard much about Edwin Williams. To be honest, I didn't even know who he was before looking at possible center prospects.

From what I've heard, however, Edwin is a very hard worker, and was one of the more liked guys in the locker-room.

John Sullivan will likely be the starter come Week One, but Minnesota needs depth behind him.

Can you name the Vikings back-up center?

***Round six selection was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for Quarterback Kelly Holcomb***

Round seven, 1st pick: P.J. Hill, Running Back, Wisconsin

I have never had the Vikings taking a running back in my mock draft whatsoever, so what has made me change my mind?

Chester Taylor's contract expires after the 2009-2010 season, so he will likely choose to sign with a team that will give him a legitimate chance to star. Adrian Peterson will not be losing his starting job anytime soon though.

P.J. Hill is a very physical and tough runner. He is 5'11", 230 pounds, and will be a good goal-line and third down running back.

Round seven, 2nd pick: Stephen Hodge, Safety, TCU

The only pick that remains the same is in the seventh round.

Stephen Hodge is a very under-rated safety, so there is a good chance he will be over-looked and possibly won't even be drafted.

Plus, Minnesota needs depth at safety. They could switch one of their seven current cornerbacks to safety, but it doesn't seem very likely.
