Juan Pablo Montoya will have a new paint scheme in the upcoming race at Talladega Superspeedway. Instead of the Target logo, Montoya will be running the TUMS Dual Action as the primary sponsor on the car.
The paint scheme features blue and white as the primary colors. There are lightning bolts on either side of the car near Montoya's car number, most likely symbolizing the quick relief of the TUMS Dual Action product.
Coincidentally, TUMS Dual Action will hit the shelves on race weekend. Apparently, it works as quickly as JPM runs at Talladega and, even better, is available at Target stores (Montoya's other sponsor).
The critical question, however, is if Montoya himself will need a few TUMS in the incredibly stressful restrictor plate racing that is Talladega.
Chances are that Montoya's acid reflux will be under control, as Talladega is one of his strongest tracks. At last year's spring Talladega race, JPM actually finished second, his best finish to date at a restrictor plate track.
Montoya was not as fortunate in the fall Talladega race of '08. Although he ran well for much of the contest, Montoya eventually got caught up in a "big one," one of the multiple-car crashes that are staples of Talladega racing.
Still, this track has been good to JPM, as it matches some of his other good finishes at road courses like Sonoma and Watkins Glen. He has one top-five and one top-10 finish at the Superspeedway so far.
Montoya has been steadily improving since coming onto the NASCAR scene. He has continued to advance and is currently in the 15th position in points.
With his points position, JPM is knocking at the door of the top 12, the cut off for the championship chase contenders. Talladega may just be the race to put him into the coveted brotherhood.
So perhaps Montoya will not need the TUMS for any stomach upset caused by stress and poor performance. He may instead need them to calm his tummy after a night of celebrating another great finish at 'Dega.
