Coaches, Helmets, and Billboards: MLB Season Brings Absurd Changes

Timothy CousinoApr 2, 2008

This year first and third base coaches are wearing helmets to protect them from killer line drive foul balls, due to a tragic accident that happened last year in a minor league game.

I think the play-by-play announcers should be wearing them also.

They are subject to foul balls...maybe even an errant beer cup could come thier way. I think the rule was ludicrous to begin with. What about the fans? Aren't they subject to the same fate?

I believe a chest protector and shin guards are also in order.

Or how a bout an unbreakable plexi-glass shield so they can still see and get signs from thier unprotected managers?

This accident that happened was tragic, and I can see people upset over it, but the change is not going to bring him back or even protect a coach from a screaming line drive foul ball anyway. It is an occupational hazard that players and coaches live with day in and day out.

This goes down as another reaction to make the public feel safe. But are they?

Everyone knows that when you enter a ball park there is always a chance of a foul ball or even a raining beer cup from the upper deck that could strike you dead at any given moment.

I love foul balls, that's why some of us go to the games.

Curtis Granderson tore up some grass making a diving catch the other day, I think maybe he should give some money to help save the rain forests.

Dan Dickerson, announcer for the Detroit Tigers is literally taking his life in his own hands by not wearing a helmet to do a broadcast.

Maybe the coaches should have mitts and take infield practice instead of giving it.

Well it is already a done deal, so why don't we make it lucrative for them by having ads like Aflac or Geico pasted on the back of thier helmets?

You know what?  I feel a lot safer knowing that our coaches are safe now .

The TREES are not safe though, we need bats.
