Teams That Should Clean House at the NHL Trade Deadline

Tom Urtz Jr.Mar 27, 2013

The NHL trade deadline is next week and teams are already in a trading mood. Rumors are swirling about who could go and who could stay, and there are a few teams—like the Calgary Flames—that should clean house at the deadline.

The following teams have solid assets and are unlikely to make the playoffs or go on a sizable run, so they should capitalize on the current market.

The deadline is already in full swing with Jarome Iginla headed to Pittsburgh. Here are the teams who will be huge sellers at the deadline.

Calgary Flames

1 of 5

The Calgary Flames should use this deadline to sell high on two of their bigger assets and two of their bigger contracts.

Jarome Iginla is headed to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a shocker after it all but appeared that he was headed to Boston.

Nonetheless, the sale has started for the Flames.

Other teams could also be interested in offensive-defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.

Bouwmeester has a sizable cap hit of $6,680,000, but teams may be willing to take it because of his offense and the lack of defensemen on the market.

When you think of the returns Calgary could get for these players, and the cap space the team could free up in the process, it makes all the sense in the world to clean house.

San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks moved Douglas Murray. Trade rumors are surrounding Dan Boyle and Ryane Clowe. G.M. Doug Wilson understands the time has come to make some roster moves.

The Sharks are currently in a playoff spot, but cleaning the house by moving some bad contracts and underperforming players would be a great move in a huge sellers' market.

Philadelphia Flyers

3 of 5

The Philadelphia Flyers are having a very disappointing season. With a big part of the team's future invested in their young prospects and player, cleaning house at the deadline may not be the worst idea.

In this market when Douglas Murray is fetching two second-round draft picks, imagine what Braydon Coburn could get on the open market.

Kurtis Foster is also a player who could carry some value, and a veteran like Ruslan Fedotenko could also fetch a nice return.

It was rumored that the team was discussing a deal centered around Daniel Briere, so the team may be in a selling mood.

Dallas Stars

Mike Heika of The Dallas Morning News was on the Marek vs. Wyshynski podcast on Monday, and he was discussing how the Brenden Morrow trade could spell the start of the Stars being sellers at the deadline.

He feels that as the deadline approaches they will make their final decision on players like Jaromir Jagr and Derek Roy.

In this market the Stars could improve their future roster by selling high on their "stars."

Phoenix Coyotes

5 of 5

The Phoenix Coyotes have not played well over the last couple of games, and they should clear house at the deadline.

They brought in forward Steve Sullivan this past summer, but he is a player who could net a nice return on the open market.

They also could consider dealing defenseman Keith Yandle because they are having a tough time scoring goals. With Oliver Ekman-Larsson the team's franchise defender, it could be the time to move Yandle.

The Coyotes have multiple areas to address, so shaking things up at the deadline would make a ton of sense.
