Matt Barkley Pro Day: What to Watch for During USC QB's Workout on Wednesday

Patrick ClarkeJun 1, 2018

Former USC quarterback Matt Barkley will have one last shot to impress an NFL team at USC's pro day on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old passer is facing several questions about his shoulder and whether he has what it takes to develop into a successful starting quarterback in the NFL.

Although Barkley has put tons of great throws and touchdown passes on tape over the past four years, there are significant doubts about his potential and questions that must be answered.

Here's what to watch for on Wednesday.

How Does the Shoulder Look?

The first thing scouts and coaches will be looking for on Wednesday is how Barkley's shoulder holds up and how well he can throw in the wake of recovering from a separated shoulder suffered last season.

Durability is a huge concern with Barkley, and that's why his stock plummeted late last year.

He didn't throw at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, but he will give NFL higher-ups a taste of his skill set on Wednesday.

Barkley has had months to recover and should be feeling 100 percent considering he was at "90 percent of complete recovery" a month ago, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. That said, there will be no excuses for the former Trojan this spring.

If the shoulder holds up and looks solid, perhaps Barkley erases the doubts and turns himself into a first-round selection this April.

Just How Accurate Can He Be?

There's no denying that Barkley is an accurate passer. Just go back and take a look at his numbers at USC (64.1 completion percentage from 2009 to 2012). But the question is whether Barkley is NFL accurate?

Can he put the ball on the money time and time again, and can he hit the open man while rolling left or right?

These are questions that Barkley will answer on Wednesday. Although he won't have to worry about dodging defenders and throwing under duress, he'll be forced to show off his accuracy by making a variety of throws all over the field.

Like West Virginia's Geno Smith, Barkley can boost his draft stock at the most important time of the year with a smooth pro day workout. And throwing accurate passes will be the biggest key to that.

Is Arm Strength an Issue?

It's safe to say we won't see Matt Barkley winging deep balls like Joe Flacco anytime soon, but arm strength extends beyond the ability to throw balls over the top of defenses.

It will be interesting to see how well Barkley can perform on Wednesday in situations where his arm strength will be tested. Can he make the deep out throws quickly?

Can he get the ball across field and on target?

Barkley can throw the football that's for sure, but in the NFL, velocity is king. If you can't zing the ball into your target, you won't last long. Geno Smith was able to back up the tape by putting plenty of zip on the ball at his pro day, and Barkley can do the same on Wednesday.
