How Will the New York Giants Address the WR Situation?

Steve ChottApr 17, 2009

As New York Giants management, players, fans, and Mel Kiper all get ready to see what will happen on draft day, it has become a well known fact that the Giants are most likely to trade their first round pick for a wide receiver.

Ever since Plaxico Burress was released in the offseason, football fans know the Giants, which has alot of depth, need a big wide receiver for our quarterback to throw to.

And since Burress was released there have been rumors of the Giants trading to get that receiver. We heard possibilities of Braylon Edwards, Anquan Boldin, Chad Ocho Cinco, and Tory Holt.

Another possibility is that the Giants could go ahead and draft a receiver.

At their position, there should be some possibilities: North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks, Rutgers' Kenny Britt, Florida's Percy Harvin, and maybe even Maryland's Darius Heyward-Bey.

So as draft day moves closer, I examine each of our draft day possibilities.

Trade for Anquan Boldin

Early on in the offseason, it seemed like this wasn't going to happen. The Cardinals haven't shown must interest in trading Boldin, and I don't blame them.

Last season, Boldin had 89 receptions for 1,038 yards, and 11 touchdowns.

And at the age of 28, he is still a reliable receiver for the future.

But one question I do ask, like I did with TJ Houshmanzadeh, will Boldin be able to be that go-to guy?

Like Housh in Cincinnati, there was a guy that was a top receiver over him. Chad Ocho Cinco with the Bengals and Larry Fitzgerald with the Cardinals.

If Boldin came to New York as Eli Manning's go-to guy, then I think his production will be less of what they got with Plaxico. Burress was such a tall, strong receiver and it will be difficult to replace him.

Trade for Braylon Edwards

I have made no effort to hide the fact that since day one, I have wanted Braylon Edwards to play for the New York Giants.

Back a little while ago, I wrote a memo to the Giants that they should pick up Braylon Edwards. I compared the stats of Edwards' four year career and Plaxico's four years with the Giants.

"In his four years with the New York Giants, Plaxico Burress piled up 244 receptions, 3,680 yards, and 33 touchdowns."

"In the last four years with the Browns ,Edwards has had 228 receptions, 3,358 yards, and 28 touchdowns."

So yes, Edwards' stats are not as good as Burress', but they are close. And if Braylon comes to New York, he will get an upgrade in just about everything that he had in Cleveland.

There is the ugly issue with Braylon's supposed drop problems, which I will agree is a problem but a fixable problem. It is definitely something that this great Giants management can fix.

Looking at his stats, even without the drops, those are still very good stats for someone who drops a lot of balls.

Draft a Receiver

The last choice it appears that they could take is drafting one of the receivers I mentioned earlier in the article.

I am not a draft expert, nor a very knowledgable person when it comes to how college prospects will pan out.

That being said, I do not like the thought of the Giants drafting a receiver to be their go-to guy. I like to see a guy out there who is a talented receiver, who has already proven himself.

Hakeem Nicks, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Kenny Britt, and Percy Harvin all proved they were good college players but who knows if they have the size or strength to play in the NFL.

I would much rather see the Giants go with someone who is NFL experienced.

So, who should the Giants go for?

I am sticking by my guy, Braylon Edwards.

I think Edwards will shine very bright in New York if he is brought in. While playing in Cleveland, he doesn't get as much attention as the Plaxico Burress and Steve Smiths of the world.

Edwards is also a guy who seems to have a good personality. I was watching the college slam dunk contest where Braylon was a judge and it seemed he was just there having fun.

Along with Steve Smith, the two of them could make a deadly duo for Eli Manning to throw it to. Both are young guys, and the Giants' receiving corps is a younger group after the departures of Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress.

Domenick Hixon, Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, and possibly Braylon Edwards.

While I wouldn't mind seeing Anquan Boldin play for Big Blue, I am still calling for Braylon Edwards.
