-Boof Bonser lost 30 pounds during the offseason because he had a reputation for not being able to get far into games. Well, in 2006 is xFIP was 4.39 and he averaged just .6 less pitches per inning than he did in 2007. It was about a three percent difference in the average number of pitches per inning between the years, yet in 2006 Boof didn't have a reputation for being too fat, while in 2007 everyone fretted about his weight.
He had a high ERA last year but his xFIP was 4.60, which isn't far removed from his 4.39 xFIP when he was a rookie.
Getting obsessed about Bonser's weight may have been a mistake. Whenever you lose a lot of weight your body will lose muscle mass as well as fat. Losing muscle mass can hurt a pitcher like Bonser who needs to throw the ball really hard repeatedly.
Bonser was still throwing fast though, I saw a few of his pitches register above 95 mph on the Metrodome radar guns. It's hard to say anything other than Bonser is a question mark going into the season.
-Adam Everett’s glove nearly makes up for his bad bat. We got to see a great play from him today but I still miss Jason Bartlett, who never gained any respect from the Twins.
-The Twins might have given up a bunch of runs tonight, but it was to a talented Angel lineup. The more important stat from this game is the fact the Twins only got one run. Yesterday they won 3-2, so it is clear that offense is going to be at a premium.
-It won't matter how well the Twins’ pitchers perform if the offense is only averaging two runs a game.
-Justin Morneau is still looking for his first hit, when he fails to bring his bat to the game the Twins have a very hard time winning.
-The Angels defeated the Twins 9-1.
