Greatest Comebacks in UEFA Champions League History

Arsenal and Barcelona will attempt to recover two-goal deficits in the second legs of their Champions League last-16 matches this week.

Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich at the Emirates and will need to score at least three times at the Allianz Arena to have any hope of reaching the quarterfinals. Barcelona trail 2-0 after their surprise loss to AC Milan at the San Siro and could suffer a shockingly early exit.

Is there precedent for either team mounting a miraculous recovery?

B/R’s National Lead Writer Dan Levy has done his research.

“In the last 10 years, a team has taken a lead into the second leg of a knockout stage 88 times and won 71 of those ties,” said Levy. “In that same span, a team with a two-or-more-goal lead heading into the second leg has won 28 of 31 ties.”

In this clip, Levy and B/R’s World Football Editor Will Tidey recall some of the most famous comebacks in Champions League history—touching upon Chelsea’s turnaround against Napoli last season, Real Madrid’s 2003-04 capitulation to Monaco and Milan’s undoing at the hands of Deportivo La Coruna in the same season.

There’s also time to mention some of the great single-game comebacks, including an unforgettable night for Manchester United fans in 1999 and the so-called miracle of Istanbul conjured by Liverpool in 2005.
