1. Detroit Lions
• Needs: QB—The team has restructured Daunte Culpepper’s contract but still need to put a face to this franchise, and if they take a quarterback No. 1, they could have Daunte help mentor him.
• Pick: Matt Stafford is the best QB by far in this draft, and his arm strength is better than Matt Ryan's. If his accuracy improves he could even start next season.
Hopefully, with their other first round draft pick, they will take a solid offensive tackle to protect their new franchise quarterback.
2. St. Louis Rams
• Needs: WR, OT—This once explosive offense is now a shell of itself. It needs a big play WR to go down the field and take pressure off of Marc Bulger. This is even more important with the release of Tory Holt.
Offensive line problems have plagued this team for two years now, and every year injuries to this already thin line have hurt them. Inability to protect Bulger or open wholes for Jackson have really hurt this once powerful offense!
• Pick: Eugene Monroe is the best offensive lineman in the draft and will help an aging, oft-injured line shore up their protection.
Monroe, out of Virginia, is a very safe pick for the Rams and he is good at both run and pass blocking. He might not be as flashy a lineman as some of the other leading blockers, but he is very dependable and has much less risk than the others.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
• Needs: Where do we start? They need defensive playmakers, and if they get rid of Larry Johnson, they will need a running back. But this team might have the most gaps to fill of anyone in the NFL.
• Pick: Aaron Curry will make a solid middle linebacker in the NFL for years. I think that the Chiefs will play the 4-3 defense, and they need a stud middle linebacker that tackles everything that moves. Curry is that player.
Trading down to acquire more draft picks is a very real possibility.
4. Seattle Seahawks:
• Needs: Before this team picked up TJ Houshmandzadeh in free agency, I thought they would have taken a receiver. Now it looks like they will try and pick up a solid linebacker for their struggling defense, or the best offensive lineman available.
• Pick: Jason Smith, OT from Baylor, will make Matt Hassleback very happy this year. Offensive line help could really vault this team back to the top very quickly. A great pass blocker will make this offense much more explosive down the field.
5. Cleveland Browns:
• Needs: Defense is what this team has to address in the draft. Both linebacker and defensive back play this past season was very poor for the Browns.
• Pick: The Browns would love for Curry to fall to them, but since he is already gone, they will take the next best linebacker—Rey Maualuga from USC.
The Browns also will be taking trade offers as they would love to gather more picks to get better on defense.
6. Cincinnati Bengals:
• Needs: OT and WR. Tackle was a huge problem last year for the Bengals. They need a center and tackle, but with no great centers in this draft, expect them to take the best available tackle.
With TJ gone for Carson Palmer, if the Bengals fall in love with a receiver don't be shocked if they take a skill position player.
• Pick: The Bengals won't be able to help themselves if Crabtree is available. They have to take him. He has the best playmaking ability in the draft; only his foot injury has him sliding this far.
7. Oakland Raiders:
• Needs: The real need is a new owner, but since that is not going to happen, they also need an offensive lineman or help at receiver. Trading down would be good for any other team, but Al Davis never trades down.
• Pick: Jeremy Maclin, WR from Missouri would make a great pick for this offense that lacks any receiver with a deep threat. If Maclin and Crabtree happen to be gone, they will take the best lineman available.
8. Jacksonville Jaquars:
• Needs: Offensive tackle and defensive line help are both really needed for this Jags' team that was very injury prone last year. Most games only had at most two starters on the line because of injuries.
• Pick: BJ Raji is a monster at 6'1" 330 pounds. In 2008 he recorded 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. At BC, he was a mauler, and look for him to be a monster for years to come for the Jags'.
9. Green Bay Packers:
• Needs: A defensive end or outside linebacker to create a pass rush is much needed. This team took a big step back last year on defense. They need to get pressure on other teams quarterbacks or really improve their secondary to win consistently.
• Pick: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas, would be a nice addition to a team that lacked any pass rush last year. He is a workout freak who is a great edge rusher that many think will end up like Dwight Freeney.
10. San Francisco:
• Needs: Quarterback, receiver, and defensive end would all be areas of need. This team needs a face to the franchise, and if they give up on Alex Smith, a quarterback would make a lot of sense here. I'm not sure Stafford would slide this far, but Sanchez should still be on the board.
• Pick: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC, was really impressive in workouts with his athletic ability showing through. This team needs a face to the franchise, and his image and leadership would fit in nicely with the 49ers.
Of course, the top 10 picks go to the worst teams, so all of them are subject to trade down and acquire more picks. But most of these teams will find it hard to find trade partners.
NFL Draft 2009 is only a few weeks away, and no one can wait to see which teams do what. Make sure you check back later in the week as Craig will break down picks No. 11-No. 20 in his Mock NFL Draft 2009.
