St. John's Guard D'Angelo Harrison Suspended for Rest of Season

Matt FitzgeraldJun 8, 2018

St. John's has lost its leading scorer and captain for the remainder of the 2012-13 college basketball season. The Red Storm's official athletic website broke the news regarding sophomore D'Angelo Harrison's suspension:

"

St. John's head coach Steve Lavin announced Friday the suspension of sophomore guard D'Angelo Harrison for the remainder of the 2012-13 season. Harrison will miss the Red Storm's remaining three regular-season games, the BIG EAST Championship at Madison Square Garden and any 2013 postseason appearances.

"

Lenn Robbins of the New York Post cited sources who indicated that Harrison had used up any good will he had with the coaching staff in recent weeks.

But Lavin did say that he had a productive meeting with Harrison the day prior to the announcement of his suspension and that the guard's time away from the team would benefit him in the future.

Despite lackluster shooting of under 40 percent, Harrison has not shied away from pulling the trigger this year. He leads the Red Storm in averaging 17.8 points per game, but he has been known to have a fiery and emotional personality that has worn on St. John's over the past two years.

Harrison's most recent performance was particularly disappointing, as he made just one of 12 shots in a 63-47 loss to Pittsburgh.

At 16-11 overall and 8-7 in the perpetually tough Big East conference, St. John's already had a difficult task ahead as a bubble team for the NCAA tournament.

The last two contests of the regular season are especially tough, with a trip to Notre Dame and a home showdown with Marquette to cap things off.

Without their top scorer down this critical stretch, it's hard to fathom that the Red Storm will be able to do enough to make it in. Freshman forward JaKarr Sampson (14.7 points per game) is the only other player who averages in double-figure scoring for St. John's.
