Barça's YNWA Diagnosis: "Estic Boig Per Tu" Separates the "Culés"

Josep Vernet-RieraApr 12, 2009

Barça unveiled its new chant during the Barça-Bayern match on April 9.

According to Joan Laporta, the club's chairman, the chant is supposed to be Barça's You'll never walk alone.

Its name "Boig Per Tu", which means "Crazy about You" in Catalan, the chant uses the melody of Catalonia's most famous hit, "Boig Per Tu" by Sau, while the lyrics were written by another famous group "Red-In."

Still already before its unveiling Barça's new chant was in the heart of an enormous controversy.

The last verse was the heart of it.

The verse, however, is a real headache for non-Catalan fans, since many felt left out. The infamous verse says: "Culer i català, més que un club!" (translation: Culé, a term for Barça fans, and Catalan, more than a club!)

Of course Barça has numerous fans that do not speak Catalan or are not Catalan. These fans found issue in the last sentence, since it only speaks of Catalan fans and leaves the faithful Spanish followers (excuse me, but Catalonia is not Spain!) out.

Of, course this raised a separation within Barça's fans.

The Catalan fans now believe that the verse exalts the spirit of "true culers," which identifies Barça as a symbol of Catalonia's greatness, with one of the chant's lines mentioning "pure Catalan fans."

Nevertheless, some non-Catalan fans say that they are being discriminated by their own club.

In fact, the attitude of the world-famous previous chant, "Cant del Barça," was quite different, to say the least:

We're the blue and claret supporters
It matters not where we hail from
Whether it's the south or the north
Now we all agree, we all agree,
One flag unites us in brotherhood.
Blue and claret blowing in the wind
One valiant cry

As a Catalan I have to say something about this:

There are Catalans and Spaniards, but when it comes to rooting for your team, it doesn't matter "where we hail from," it only matters, that your heart is "blaugrana."

This talk of first and second tier fans is what angers me. If Barça only had Catalan supporters, then it would not be as great of a club as it is today.

Here are the lyrics in English:

Barça, I am crazy for you

On the humid ground I write
Barça I am crazy for you,
I spend my days
Awaiting the match.
How much I miss you,
Be I near or far,
Happy and finished
I am crazy for you.

I know very well that from this place
I can’t score any goals for you,
But in each action I see
Your light reflected.
I will cheer you on,
Happy and finished
I am crazy for you.

When this match starts,
The tears will be lost
Among the magic
We will live here.
I will be trapped
Drunk with this light
Happy and finished
I am crazy for you

"Culer" and Catalan, more than a club.
