Tennessee Struggling to Get the Offense Going Under Lane Kiffin

Larry BurtonApr 12, 2009

Right now, there are two words to describe Tennessee's offensive output: bad and worse. Though those would be the words any observer may have used in reporting, it was refreshing to hear Kiffin finally say that also and face up to the problem.

Just how bad was the offense? Here are some Kiffin quotes to cue you in:

"This is pretty scary right now. We've got a lot of work to do."

"We've got to get better. Our pass protection right now, we couldn't play in a real game right now. We've got a long ways to go."

"I feel like we're in the '60s right now with our offense."

With Chavis leaving a fine defense behind, and Monte Kiffin tweaking it even more, everyone felt the defense would be fine and they sure looking the part. They had seven sacks against the first team offense and only allowed one FG all day.

The offensive line looked in total disarray with blown blocking assignments everywhere absolutely pitiful pass blocking combined with very inept run blocking. Kiffin was right when he said they couldn't play in a real game right now, it would be embarrassing.

Lane will himself to blame if the offense doesn't start clicking soon  He has already stated that his Dad has total control of the defense, and it's his job to put his expertise to work on the offense.

So far his expertise has been in taking over great offenses from previous coaches and simply maintaining them. Building one from the ground up is something he's never had to do before in college and his offense never got going in the pros either.

In the last scrimmage the defense was better at moving the ball the other way than the offense was in moving it toward the goal line.  With several turnovers consisting of fumbles and multiple interceptions, there was little to build on.

While it's clear that this offense is nowhere ready for prime time, the question is, will it be ready anytime?
