The Best Available 2013 NFL Free Agents

Jesse ReedJun 8, 2018

The 2013 NFL season began on March 12, when teams started officially signing free agents.

As the NFL draft draws near, there are still excellent players to be found and bargains to be made.

To satisfy your need to keep up to date on the best players available at every position, we've assembled a list of every top player still on the market.

Quarterbacks

1 of 18

This year's class of free-agent quarterbacks isn't loaded with players who have the potential to start.

Most of these men are career backups or are in the twilight of their careers.

That doesn't mean there isn't value to be had, though. Capable backups are oftentimes just as important to teams as a franchise quarterback, as the inherent violent nature of this game creates many instances when the main man goes down.

Here are the best quarterbacks available.

1Byron Leftwich

Running Backs

2 of 18

There's a deep crop of running backs hitting the open market this season.

As the NFL becomes more of a passing league, the value of running backs has slightly declined. And because the draft is always full of backs who can step in and produce, it's rare to see a veteran pull in a monster contract as a free agent anymore.

Here are the top running backs available.

Fullbacks

3 of 18

As the NFL has evolved over the past 10 to 15 years, it seems as if the fullback position has become more and more obsolete.

But don't tell that to guys like Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore, who thrive as power running backs and rely on their fullbacks to make holes.

No, it's not the most glamorous position in the league, but the NFL isn't finished with fullbacks just yet. Here are the best fullbacks available.

Wide Receivers

There is a wealth of talent available on the open market at the wide-receiver position this offseason.

Veterans who have produced on the field won't be hard to find, but teams may be more picky about how much they'll be willing to pay because the field is so deep and the draft is loaded with young receivers.

Offensive Tackles

6 of 18

Elite offensive tackles have become some of the most highly paid players in the NFL, as they are the players most responsible for protecting the most important investment of all: quarterbacks.

There aren't many elite tackles in this year's class of free agents, but there are a few worth paying for.

Here are the top available offensive tackles.

Offensive Guards

7 of 18

As the workhorses of the offensive line, offensive guards don't get much glory. But if these big men don't do their jobs, offenses can't pound away with the running game and quarterbacks get eaten alive by powerful defensive tackles.

Here are the top guards available.

Note: Some players could be considered tackles, but they have played both positions.

Centers

8 of 18

Centers are invaluable members of offenses.

These men are often responsible for calling out assignments before plays, and the center-quarterback exchange on every play is one of the most underrated and underappreciated duties in the game of football.

This year's class of free-agent centers features a few players you might recognize and a few you likely haven't heard of.

Here are the best centers available.

2Jeff Faine6'3"303 lbs.10Bengals

Defensive Ends

9 of 18

Defensive ends are among the highest-paid players in the NFL, as they are usually the players getting sacks and pressures on opposing quarterbacks in 4-3 defensive alignments.

It will be interesting to see if anyone ends up with a Mario Williams-type of contract this March, as teams will be vying for the right to claim a top-flight pass-rusher to add to their defense.

Here are the top defensive ends available right now.

Defensive Tackles

10 of 18

Football is won and lost in the trenches.

Defensive tackles are more often than not unheralded players who spend their entire careers doing the dirty work that wins games, stuffing the run and occupying multiple blockers to facilitate their teammates' pursuit of the ball-carrier.

Here are the best defensive tackles available.

Note: Also included on this list are 3-4 defensive ends and 3-4 nose tackles.

3-4 Outside Linebackers

11 of 18

Elite 3-4 outside linebackers are one of the hottest commodities in the NFL these days.

For defenses that operate in a 3-4 scheme, outside linebackers are the key to getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks and holding the edge on running plays.

Here are the top 3-4 outside linebackers available.

1Bryan Thomas 6'4"266 lbs.11Jets33.5
2Travis LaBoy6'4"249 lbs.7Chargers29.5

4-3 Outside Linebackers

12 of 18

Speed, agility and the ability to flow from sideline to sideline are traits necessary for 4-3 outside linebackers to thrive.

If the recent trend of teams moving to the now-popular 3-4 scheme continues to flourish, this position will become more and more specialized. For now, though, there are still plenty of teams in need of outside linebackers.

There aren't any players in this class who compare to Von Miller, but there is plenty of depth and quality to be found.

Here are the best 4-3 outside linebackers available.

Safeties

15 of 18

Safeties are the last line of defense in the NFL, and they are also the enforcers on plays across the middle (though they must be more careful these days to avoid costly penalties).

This year's class of safeties is deep, and given the skilled players entering the draft at the same position, it will be really intriguing to watch teams negotiate with these veterans.

Here are the best safeties currently available.

Kickers

16 of 18

Kickers are crucial to a team's success.

If they perform well, they are often late-game heroes who put the cherry on top of a well-fought contest.

If they don't perform well, they are excoriated to no end on radio talk shows and around water coolers on Monday mornings.

Restricted Free Agents

18 of 18

Restricted free agents are players who have three "accrued" seasons (six games or more per season) under their belt and more often than not stay with the team that drafted them.

According to NFL.com:

"

He can negotiate with any club through April 19. If the Restricted Free Agent signs an offer sheet with a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him because the qualifying offer entitles it to a "right of first refusal" on any offer sheet the player signs. If the old club does not match the offer, it may receive draft choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer.

"
