Miguel Cotto Comes to Blows With His Uncle/Trainer, Evangelista Cotto

King JApr 10, 2009

Reports have recently come out about the physical fight that took place between WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and his uncle and trainer, Evangelista Cotto.

Miguel and his uncle have had a long history of disagreements that have lead to heated verbal confrontations and even ignoring each other until they walked down toward the ring. But recently their love/hate relationship as uncle/trainer has taken its toll for the worse.

Apparently Miguel made it clear to Evangelista that he saw some new changes and improvements that he wanted to add to his training camp and fight plan.

Evangelista strictly disapproved of these new additions and also complained that he needed to keep an eye on Miguel at all times to make sure he was abstaining from any partying, women, drinking, etc.

Allegedly, Evangelista and Miguel's arguments got so out of control that it led to punches and physical confrontations.

Miguel ended up with a small cut on his face and Evangelista even took the rumble to a whole other level by throwing a brick at Miguel, missing Miguel and going through the window of Miguel's car.

Miguel has since released a statement expressing that Evangelista is no longer his trainer and no longer his uncle. (HA HA, just kidding about the no longer his uncle part)

Bob Arum, Miguel's promoter has made an appointment on April 15 to meet with Miguel to find him a new trainer.

Miguel Cotto is slated to fight IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey on June 13 at Madison Square Garden.

Cotto better get himself a damn good trainer, for he is in the toughest fight of his career come June (Minus Margarito with illegal plaster of Paris-loaded gloves).

With all of this drama surfacing who would be a good candidate to train Miguel Cotto? I personally would nominate the hottest trainer in the sport right now, Nazim Richardson.

Richardson, the trainer of the hour, has resurrected the careers of Sugar Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins with two of the biggest wins of their careers where both fighters were considered big under dogs.

Richardson even taught Bernard Hopkins, one of the most boring fighters in the sport, how to fight in a more dominant and exciting manner in his big win against Kelly Pavlik.

Richardson, more importantly, was the only trainer to care enough about his fighter Mosley to take notice and catch the disgraceful Antonio Margarito loading his gloves with plaster of Paris.

With such a devoted trainer like Richardson, Cotto will never have to worry about fighting another fighter who is illegally loading his gloves again.

So what do you say, Bob Arum? Let's get Nazim Richardson on that Top Rank payroll for the love of your No. 2 cash cow!
